About this deal

Midnight Secretary is written and illustrated by Ohmi Tomu. It was serialized by Shogakukan in the josei (aimed at younger adult women) manga magazine Petit Comic from 2006 to May 2009. Serial chapters were collected in seven shinsōban volumes under the Flower Comics imprint.

Characters: Nah, none of them impacted me that much, of course, I still find vampire characters very hot, which makes me like Touma a little, but apart from that, it only makes me slightly resentful of him and his arrogant personality. Kaya is so disappointing, again following the law of weak woman in vampire stories, the amount that this woman devalues herself is bizarre, since when does a secretary have the same role as a private prostitute? Kaya needs to learn about two things: Self-love and the true role of a secretary. At a time when so much seems to be at stake, can both just open up to one another, and express how they truly feel about each other? Or, will they each let the other slip away forever? Abigail eventually discovers that there is more to her new boss than meets the eye. He is a vampire. Vampires are drawn to witch blood more than any other kind so she has to keep her magic a secret at all costs. She can’t let Sebastian discover what she really is. Since sexual attraction makes it even harder to keep her magic quiet, that task becomes harder and harder.Favorite Character: Abigail. I understood her pain as she’s dealing with a lot. If her mother dies, will she ascend as High Priestess? Even though there’s some in the coven who despise her? And what about Sebastian and her dark fantasies about him sinking his fangs into her while they have sex? Mmm, deliciously dark and seductive. The witch subplot parts were my favourite bits of the book, to be honest. It's not bad for what it is - I was even pleasantly surprised - but I mean. Mistaken for Pregnant: About two thirds of the way through the series, Kaya is taken into protective custody by vampire council higher-ups, because they believe she's pregnant to Kyouhei. When asked about her diet and iron supplements, Kaya points out she's anemic (since she's feeding a vampire regularly!). She's been looking at baby clothes because she thought they were cute and she has a friend and former co-worker who's pregnant. Which becomes hilarious when Kaya falls pregnant for real some time later. This incident also triggers Kyouhei into taking his future with Kaya more seriously, setting up his own research project to find a blood substitute that can sustain him, unlike the kind that is already in general use. Art: It's curious, I know the manga is from the 2000s, but his art looks older, I'm not very used to that style, but it's not bad art, just different.

Ohmi has an interesting take on vampires in this series; far as I can tell they can't be made, only born and only between a human and a vampire. As such there's few enough of them in existence. Much of the popular folklore about them is false also. They only need a meal once or twice a week to sustain them, direct sunlight weakens (but doesn't kill) them and its the power of faith (of any religion) that hurts them, not the artifacts or words. Okay, so before we get on with this review, there is one thing I need to make clear: this is one of my all time favorite manga. This is not the first time I've read it. I first read it in 2009, and have returned to it time and again since. This manga series is for mature audience readers only. Oh my! While the last volume has some mature content this one is much more geared to adult manga fans. Office, vampire romance here we go! There's also those who try to seperate the two. Kyouhei's brother, Touma Masaki, and a female vampire, Marika. The vampire clan becomes a big deal towards the end of the manga since Kyouhei is "losing his pride" as a vampire by loving a human and drinking fake blood. I honestly haven’t read much new manga lately. I’ve spent most of my time reading non-graphic novels and non-fiction books, so my manga reading list has grown steadily longer, causing much anxiety. Also, because I tend to read series when I buy them, it’s taken me ages to get through manga these days. That’s been the main reason behind the delay in Dorohedoro updates, and why I haven’t written a review of Witch Hat Atelier even though I really love it. I’m just following everything very slowly and buying volumes when I can.I must say though that the sexist roles taken get a bit annoying. The expectations of secretaries, the fact that they are all females and all board members, etc are men gets frustrating. So I was less than a fan about the stereotypical roles shown of everyone. General thoughts: I was very surprised to find this book in my local train station book store - the US hasn't had any of Tomu Ohmi's mangas licensed yet, and although this series was quite popular in scanlation circles I hadn't heard of a German license.

The good parts were. the family drama, art was nice. There were boobs even though the sex was pretty weak. And i like boobs. Drama plus boobs = 3/10 1 for each boob There is some really really bad family drama going as well. The family drama between the male lead and his mom was ok actually. Dare i say decent. But when the female leads mom was involved that was kinda shit. Review- Not a lot happens in this volume other than we see Kyohei finally come to terms with the fact that he is in love with Kaia and that he's going to have to deal with that. We do get to see exactly how competent Kaya is and running both the secretarial group for her new company and still managing all of Kyohei affairs at night. At the end of the volume it is revealed that Kyohei has left his father's company to create one of his own. He feels that it is time for him to move on and that he has repaid the debt he owes his family. Of course he wants Kaya to come and be his secretary there but as she has contracted to work at the new company for a year she is currently refusing. It will be interesting to see where the story goes in the next four volumes. Enjoyment: Well, like I said before, it was fun like reading a fanfic until one part, after that it got boring. I don't usually read the romance genre - I just liked the idea of a vampire being secretly the CEO of a company without anyone knowing. Then there was a whole witch subplot with the main female lead, which was more than I was expecting, but coming from fantasy books I would've liked to see more of that. I'm aware that's not the priority of this book though, so I won't hold that against it too much.Favorite Quote: “Then you have to keep your mouth and fangs to yourself!” she jumped up from the couch, not minding the blanket that fell to the floor.

Kiss of the Vampire: Kyouhei finds that women's blood tastes best at the point of the woman's orgasm, and the bite itself is intensely pleasurable. There is also some twists in this series. Which is baffling to me because I think the author forgets that you aren't actually supposed to see the twist coming. Thats why its called a twist. I like that the Director does trust her a lot and that becomes very evident. She just knows and there is definitely, in my opinion, more stuff stirring underneath what is in the surface and I like that. I’m a junkie for this series. After reading book one, I went through withdrawal symptoms waiting for part two to come out. I tried to be patient but you know how it is when you become so attached to a book series, patience goes out the window. I fantasized various scenarios (some outlandish, most super-sexy) and when I finally read part two (in one sitting), Erin Bedford blew my freakin’ mind! That's Kyouhei Touma*. And, yes, he's a jerk, but he's also a major book crush of mine. Hey, at least I'm self-aware!! On the outside, she’s a work from home mom and bookbinger. One the inside, she’s a thirteen-year-old boy screaming to get out and tell you the pervy joke they found online. As an ex-computer programmer, she dreams of one day combining her love for writing and college credits to make the ultimate video game! More than Mind Control What Kaya fears Kyouhei is doing to her. He isn't. He comments it's more likely the other way around. Wendell, Sarah (20 December 2008). "Online Manga: The Midnight Secretary". Smart Bitches, Trashy Books . Retrieved 13 April 2009. I'll keep collecting this in German, and will probably collect Akuma to Love Song in German, too, with this quality of work.
