Dawson’s storytelling when I read The Violence, but this newest book has solidified her place in my dark heart as a new favorite author. Bloom takes you on a roller-coaster of emotions one page after another, unveiling one's deepest feelings through the captivating beauty of art and flowers. I enjoyed the intriguing little hints and backstory and recurring dreams about Seth, Petra, and Anaya’s differences and abilities. even though it's middle grade, the protagonists; petra, anaya, and seth, are teenagers, but they're not much else.She briefly wonders if eating the girls food is anything like Persephone slipping rose-red seeds between her lips in the Underworld. I thought that the slow build of her relationship with Ash and the way Ro would overlook red flags was really believable and well done. She imagined a dull flower suddenly opening its petals, and they were dazzling, and everyone would look up from their phones and whip out their earbuds and gasp and say, Where did that come from!

Some minor signifiers throughout the story indicate Anaya’s mom is of Indian heritage and her dad is white. Luckily, Sorrel doesn’t have any trouble following them, until the day she discovers a faded packet of Surprising Seeds buried under a tree in her backyard.Something has to be done, but we see that nobody really knows what to do when they're facing something they've never dealt with before (the parallels with the current situation regarding Covid-19 make this all the more terrifying). Relating one’s emotional self to those around us is at the very heart of Colquhoun’s queer critical and political project. It was a refuge from the crowded hallways, the splayed legs, the noise, the bathroom lineups, the bathroom paper towels (or lack thereof), the bathroom toilet paper (nonexistent), the bathroom toilet seats (too disgusting to contemplate). Anne Booth is a highly-acclaimed children’s fiction and picture book author and is known for the exceptional warmth and authenticity of her writing. However, please remember that I am a white reviewer continually learning about representation, particularly in middle grade, so take my words with a grain of salt.

When you lived on Salt Spring Island, people were always telling you the best things to eat and drink.
