About this deal

Well I originally set out to write three books, but things happened to make me expand that. I had the ideas of what would happen in those three books, but things have expanded in a sort of concertina fashion, with the other books fitting in between the original three. What was going to be the third book is now going to be the seventh book, which is the book I’m writing at the moment, and that is the apocalyptic battle between the army of the kids and they army of the adults. I always knew that’s where I was going to end, and after the first book the second one was going to carry on directly chronologically – it would be the Holloway kids arriving at the Natural History Museum, and Small Sam and The Kid arriving at the Tower of London. The second book was going to be learning what else was going on in London, realizing there’s a growing threat and the kids trying to unite.

Whitney - The Morrison's second-in-command and a central character striking up a good friendship with Maxie. She is in charge of the smaller kids, and is extremely protective of them. Maxie Maxie* is Arran's second-in-command. She's a plain-looking girl with a no-nonsense attitude, but when things start getting ugly (as they are bound to get in such circumstances) she's strong enough to retain her humanity, even as those around her slip into savagery. Ebenezer - A religious kid that is armed with throwing spears. He is part of Ollie's Skirmisher group and joins the expedition to Promithios and the trip to find Ella. Hisgen clearly has a developed world vision, and despite the unadorned prose, is able to create an atmosphere of depression and even despair. Clearly, while all are exhausted, a number of the children are also emotionally overwhelmed, burdened with the lives of those depending on them. Atmosphere excelled, but as mentioned earlier, it's the kind of skill that will fail to entertain me. Add in a willingness to sacrifice characters and a scattershot third-person subjective narrator and emotional engagement becomes a critical problem. Perhaps the Small Sam storyline is done to mitigate the emotional distancing, but for me, it wasn't enough. Both times through I noted dialogue is done well--the voices did seem like kids speaking, and if it later treads into well-worn philosophical territory of defining humanity and rebuilding society, it at least takes awhile to get there. The book takes place in an alternate universe in London, England, where a mysterious disease has infected every adult on Earth and turned them into something akin to voracious, cannibalistic zombies. With only children under fourteen years old remaining uninfected, the survivors must band together to fight against the threat of the adults and the threats presented by other groups of survivors. Aside from the fact it's gory, the actual ""zombies"" themselves are INSANE These are not just lumbering critters who you might run into, ooh no. Nicola - Prime minister at the House of Parliament. Described as being pretty with red hair and green eyes. She respects David but doesn't like him and it is suggested that she has feelings for Ed. Meets her demise in The End, after David shoots her for rejecting him. In Holloway, a group of kids make their home in a Waitrose supermarket and elect two kids -- Arran Harper and Maxie -- as their leader and second-in-command. Another group of kids make their home in a Morrisons supermarket, and a boy named Blue establishes himself as their leader.

Josh – A boy in the Waitrose group. After Achilleus, Josh is the second-best fighter of the group and claims he isn't scared of anything. He is killed by infected monkeys. Well obviously my love of George Romero zombie films was my starting point. I’ve always loved horror and after having done Young James Bond and the action-adventure genre I thought what’s another really good genre that kids would buy into? The other great thing about horror is that it’s not gender specific. Girls love horror as much as boys, and I have tried to put a lot of good, strong female characters in the books. A horror cover doesn’t say ‘no girls allowed’. Then I thought if I’m going to do scary books, what scared me? The movie monster that always scared me the most, since I saw Night Of The Living Dead as a teenager, was the zombie. You can do a lot with zombies. George Romero himself freely admits his films had a strong satirical element to them. He was talking about American society and a lot of the stuff that was going on at that time. Because zombies are people you can add a lot of layers in, but you can do it in a way where kids don’t feel they’re being hit over the head or lectured. I think there’s a lot in my books about friendship, leadership, about society and how it works, how we learn to live with each other and what skills do we need to make a viable society. Kids don’t need to know any of that, they just want someone to be eaten again. Lila - One of Maxie's friends who is mentioned in The Fallen. She took in a mother cat and kitten but later commits suicide by jumping off a roof when the cat dies of feline influenza and the kitten of starvation. Blue Hello, recipient of my romantic love. Although he's probably thirteen, so, gross. He's the leader of a semi-rival group of surviving kids and can keep his head in almost any situation. The CDC, Promithios Biomedical, and other health organizations recognize the disease before most, if not all, of their researchers are infected. The Dead features many characters, the main characters are listed here, but you can find the others on the characters list article; Deke (deceased) - Freak's best friend who he always hung around with before the epidemic. He dies after suffering a punctured lung from a broken vending machine glass and grown-ups took him away to eat him. Ed must lead a search party to find Sam and the Kid and return them to safety, but this means going into the No Go Zone, a area of danger and mystery. Greg and Liam Thorne are invited to Paul MacLaren's farm in Maidstone to wait out the outbreak. [3] I highly recommend this to those who loves Michael Grant's GONE novels. Both book shares the same elements such as big casts, in-your-face non-stop actions, kids going against each other, alternating perspectives, fast pacings etc. It's fun literature at its best.

Curly Sam - One of the three Sam's. He has curly hair and is said to be one of the annoying kids who believe they know everything. I usually read books that are more romance-heavy, and reading this has really proven to me that I needed a break. This book was SO GOOD, you guys. Bernie – One of the Waitrose group, an emo who's responsible for many of the group's engineering feats, and Ben's best friend (see above). I failed to heed my own warning from 2020 and now I have REGRETS. (The book was still fantastic. I just feel queasy now...) The Collector - One of the main villains in The Fear, he is a large fat father with a beard, who collects children and tortures them, to the point of killing them, then disfigures them to make them in to decoysAndy Thomas ("Big Nose") – A guard at the palace who guards the door to the infirmary where Maxie and Blue are held captive. He seems doubtful that David will manage to take over London and he would rather be a farmer than a guard. After Achilleus and Lewis free Maxie and Blue, Big Nose begs to be taken with them when they leave, as he has had enough of David and knows he will be punished if he stays. They oblige, and he is among those to escape the palace, though he is apparently not sure he made the right choice. Day (?) 2 - Weather is warm and half cloudy. Cure mum dies after being injected with Sam's blood, first Parliament meeting, Ryan goes to Tower. Zosia - Brendan's new girlfriend after he breaks up with Jessica. She gets drunk from vodka and throws a fit to protest Jordan's decision to exile Brendan. Can't wait for the next instalment? This edition contains the first chapter of the thrilling third book in the series The Fear. is the year of zombies, with Brad Pitt's World War Z and Nicholas Holt's Warm Bodies films hitting cinemas.

The weather is sunny. DogNut's group leave by boat along the Thames, their boat sinks just next to Parliament and they meet Nicola's group at the Palace of Westminster. They encounter Carl of The Squatters and Ryan Aherne's group of hunters, who save them from the Gym Bunnies and give them better directions. David - a look at his plans for the future and also what has been happening for him the previous few days. This series says it over and over again—we have to work together to survive. It’s a lesson that fit right into my current world.

Sickos

Froggie- Zohra's younger brother, he too is originally from the country and came to London by coach. He is amazed by the London Eye and always wished to see it. He is seven years old. Deke – A boy in the Waitrose group. He is Freak's best friend and, before the epidemic, always hung around with him. During the swimming pool episode, Deke dies after suffering a punctured lung from broken vending machine glass, and grown-ups take him away to eat him. Disney-Hyperion, the series' American publisher, wanted to target the books at a slightly older audience. As a result, the cutoff age for infection was raised from fourteen to sixteen, and some of the characters were aged up accordingly. Additionally, some of the cultural references and terminology unique to the United Kingdom were changed to ones that American readers were more likely to understand. The kids at the museum are looking for a cure. All they need are medical supplies. To get them means a journey down unknown roads. Suddenly it's not so clear who - or what - they're fighting.
