About this deal

This design particularity is the reason thermals are not significantly improved when placing the laptop on a raiser stand, as it would if the fan would have been allowed unrestrained air access through the intake grill.

Overall I really like this laptop and there are just a few minor things that prevent it from being perfect for my use case. I'm a software developer and wanted something light but with plenty of screen real estate that I could take out and about and "cut code" on.

The only other slight quirk is that the keypad offsets the main keyboard a bit and that takes a little getting used to. I never use a keypad and it would have been perfect for me if it didn't exist and the rest of the keyboard was centered. There’s a large 80Wh battery inside this LG Gram 17, which is fair-sized for this sort of laptop. Of course, LG could have even included an even bigger battery in this 17-inch chassis, but instead chose a consistent internal design between the different Gram models. A larger 90Wh battery is available with the i7+RTX 2050 Gram 17 Pro models. Mine has a 12th Gen i7 – I did not want this as I have other machines for high performance, but I had to choose that processor buy it to get 32GB of RAM. Mine has a 1TB SSD. There turned out to be an acceptable amount of volume (84dB average at 1m from a pink noise source and 87dB peak from a music source at the same distance) and even a reasonable amount of bass, certainly more than the old 2021 model produced. Balance and definition are good, too. I really was genuinely surprised by the quality of the sound that the LG Gram 16 (2022) produces. The camera has been updated from the previous Grams as well, and is now a higher-quality and higher-resolution FHD 2 MPx shooter. It’s better than the average laptop camera, but still not amazing by any means.

The latter is particularly great to see – too many laptop panels are still limited to sRGB – and it means the LG Gram 17 is a fabulous machine on which to watch Netflix or Prime Video with colours leaping to life on that huge LCD panel. LG Gram 17 (2021) review: Performance The body of the Gram 16 is made from magnesium while the lid is plastic. That’s great for weight reduction but not so great for resistance to twisting. Grab the sides and apply serious torque and the base will flex and creak while the lid warps alarmingly. Of course, while reviewers do things like this, owners generally do not. There’s also a noticeable amount of flex when you press the middle of the keyboard. The LG gram has a fantastic screen and just feels much more comfortable ergonomically, perched on your lap etc for a coding session. I find that the bulkiness of the mac makes it uncomfortable to type on, whilst on my lap. The LG gram is less good for consuming content compared to the mac due to the speakers. The speakers aren't super bad, however they are a little "tinny" and there is no comparison to the mac speakers. The keyboard layout is a bit different than what LG offers on their Gram 16, with an extra column of keys in the NumPad section and different arrows. Furthermore, LG updated the fonts that they’re using for this generation, and the smaller writing is more visually pleasant imo.
