About this deal

The extreme corner test results shown below are an attempt to make the lens look its best in the area of the image circle where it generally looks the worst. The Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art is a general-purpose zoom maintaining a bright and constant f2.8 focal ratio across the range. It is designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras and available in the native Sony E and Leica L mounts, the latter working on Leica, Panasonic and Sigma L-mount bodies. Announced in November 2019, it’s the third Art lens designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras, following the Sigma 35mm f1.2 DG DN Art and the Sigma 14-24mm f2.8 DG DN Art. From our tests, it is clear Sigma prioritized sharpness across the frame (that is, the image field) at each focal length and aperture over outright sharpness, something that we’re seeing more frequently with modern designs. Still, we were expecting a greater increase in sharpness over the previous model. Geometric distortion makes framing a scene with a straight horizon, such as the ocean, challenging as there are no lines parallel to the edges of the viewfinder or viewfinder gridlines, though cameras with electronic levels are advantageous for overcoming this issue. I'm certain that this image and the many others I captured on this hike would not have been sharp without the aid of OS (or a tripod).

Lateral chromatic aberration is impressively well controlled accross the board. You're very unlikely to spot any fringing when shooting with this lens at any focal length or aperture. Sigma is more active than anyone else in this space, with not only an Art series 24-70mm f/2.8, but also a faster and shorter-range 24-35mm f/2 , so it’s interesting to compare the performance of these with others lenses sharing a Nikon mount, including the well-liked Nikon model and its equally-respected predecessor. That new motor seems to make a difference and I was pleasantly surprised by the focus speed of this lens. His expertise with equipment doesn’t end there, though. He is also an encyclopedia when it comes to all manner of cameras, camera holsters and bags, flashguns, tripods and heads, printers, papers and inks, and just about anything imaging-related. It is always exciting to bring in a new Sigma Art lens and covering the normal, most-commonly-used focal length range with an f/2.8 aperture combined with optical stabilization definitely raised the anticipation level for this one.

Sometimes I can easily and accurately describe the image sharpness a lens delivers in a couple of sentences and this usually reflects excellent image sharpness being delivered – or at least consistency over the focal length range. The 24-70 HSM is not newly released as I write this review, and I have evaluated a number of the since-developed Sigma Global Vision lenses that have performed very well. With the popularity and usefulness of this focal length range, we see lens manufacturers coming out with new versions of these lenses frequently with this being Sigma's fourth version since the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Aspherical DF was introduced in 2001 [per Sigma] for an average of a 4-year lifespan. In addition, many of these lenses are very similar in many regards and the selection of each can be justified for one or more reasons. In that comparison, you will find other f/2.8 lenses that perform noticeably better at f/2.8 than this one. And having that max aperture available over the entire focal length range makes using f/2.8 a pleasure as wide open exposure settings do not change with zooming. Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM review – MTF graph: These are good curves that show strong performances overall and only weaken at f/2.8 for all focal lengths. While an image stabilized f/4 lens can be handheld in much lower light levels than a non-stabilized f/2.8 lens, stabilization does not help stop subject motion.

For a low price, you get good stopped-down image quality in a nicely-built full frame-compatible lens. Coma is generally recognized by sharp contrast towards the center of an image and long, soft contrast transition toward the image periphery.A requirement for a sharp image is that subject details do not cross over image sensor pixels during the exposure. At f/4, the center shows slight improvement, but the mid and periphery show noticeable improvement.
