Coffee house Caffè Nero has announced the 16-strong shortlist for the inaugural Nero Book Awards, recognising the outstanding books of the past 12...

Isabel struggles to find positives around her and feels herself becoming more and more invisible every day. This book is very powerful, especially for children who could be going through hard times; it allows all children to learn about how it is okay to feel alone but you never are truly alone. Helping others also defeats any form of loneliness of sadness because it makes you as a person feel better. Moving areas/dealing with ‘adult’ problems (i.e. the financial problems) are what Isabella, the main character, learns about. She is a young girl ging through many changes and for children to be exposed by this it means that children learn to not judge but also look out for their friends If they seem quiet or down. Isabel thinks the snow and ice are beautiful, but it creeps up her bedpost at night and on the inside of her window. It might be pretty, but it is also very cold. The themes of this story are not new. Readers may make connections with Nicola Davies and Laura Carlin’s The Promise or Jeannie Baker’s Belonging, for instance. What these stories have in common is an understanding that lives are improved when communities come together, when acts of kindness are carried out for the benefit of others. The unique perspective in The Invisible is the focus on the social effects of poverty and the story is told in a way that is accessible to a very young child. It is true but not without hope. It shows that poverty itself may be less devastating than the dehumanising treatment of people perceived to be on the outside the mainstream. It shows that everyone has some power and control to effect positive change in their lives, even when their circumstances are dire. This is not the same as a ‘pull yourself up by the bootstraps’ attitude. It is about everyone pulls together things can be made more bearable and to seed hope. This truly is one of the most beautiful texts I have read recently and is one I want to share with all children - regardless of their age. I can see this being used throughout my primary school alongside units of work as well as thought-provoking discussions and circle times. Tom Percival has raised the bar once again.

And that was how Isabel made something very special. One of the hardest things anyone can ever make… What was your favourite book when you were a child?Tim and Tobias is the first book in the ‘Flight Path to Reading’ reading scheme and was written by Sheila K. McCullagh. It was the first book that I remember loving and was (guess what) atmospheric, magical and slightly dark. The more Isabel goes unseen, the more she begins to see the other invisible people of the city – like the man who looks after stray animals in the park, or the lady who plants flowers in paint pots. All of the invisible people in her new neighbourhood are making a difference in their own quiet way. Perhaps Isabel can too… Information Books Judges of the category of Information Books 3- 14+ also had difficult choices to make but selected Nano, where life in miniature is so skilfully explained by Dr Jess Wade and stunningly illustrated by Melissa Castrillon (Walker Books). The book offers young readers "diverse and gender positive" look at the way the global community of scientists really works, they said.

The judging criteria call for the selection to be from a "wide and inclusive range" of publishers and for books which "recognise a broad range of perspectives, experiences and voices". Judge Theresa Gooda said "The rare opportunity for such reflective book talk with colleagues, which then translated into rich classroom conversations with students, has been invaluable professional development." When Isabel’s parents can no longer pay the rent, they have no choice but to move out of their family home. Isabel soon finds herself feeling invisible to the people around her. My Comments

Genre

Tom Percival. The winners of the Diverse Book Awards 2023 have been announced, with one winner from each of the four categories announced: Picture book, Children... Gorgeous illustrations with clever use of colours helps tell this tale, reminding us to look up, be aware of others, and all important inclusion in our communities. What book do you wish you had written?‘How I came up with the meaning of life – A true story’ by Tom Percival. Because then I’d have nothing to keep me up at night!

What inspired you to write your latest book? The book Herman’s Letter first popped into my head when my girlfriend gave me a limited edition screen print by an illustrator called Simon Tozer of a bear holding a letter. The picture is called ‘The Last Post’ and I just loved the bear’s melancholy expression and wondered what he was doing carrying the letter and who it was for. My brain set to work on it and eventually came up with Herman’s Letter. I honestly don’t know what I’d do without my brain sometimes - it really is remarkably useful. He grew up in a remote and beautiful part of South Shropshire. On reflection this seemed rather more remote than beautiful, owing to the fact that he lived in a small caravan without electricity, mains water or any sensible form of heating. He thinks that he’s probably one of the few people in his peer group to have learnt to read by gas lamp. Isabel and her family don’t have much money, but she loves their home and is grateful for all the things they do have. So when they’re forced to move across the city to a new neighbourhood, Isabel doesn’t feel like she belongs. It’s as though she’s becoming invisible – nobody seems to see that she’s there. Tom Percival has based this story on his own lived experiences. There are too many still living this experience. The message of hope the book delivers is powerful. It reminds us that small acts can make a big difference. It reminds us to look for the helpers.

Who or what was your biggest influence in deciding to become a writer? I just love making up stories and drawing pictures – it was inevitable. Not that I’d get published of course, but even if I hadn’t got published I’d still sit there coming up with ideas and writing them down. It’s just what I do.The spread accompanying this text shows Isabel’s parents, united. The father has a protective arm around the mother. They smile as Isabel plays in the snow with her puppy. We all have a place, somewhere we belong. It is not just poverty that can make people invisible to others. This book is an excellent way into having these unfortunately necessary discussions. Tom Percival employs the symbolism of value and worth of today’s society through a child’s experience within his thoughtful picture book. Through Isabel’s creation we are made aware of so many ‘invisible’ people. Yet the old lady planting flowers becomes an outlet and beacon for Isabel. She leads with this action too, to bring colour, optimism, the springing of something different into her own and others’ lives. Bestselling author Alexandra Christo, author of TikTok sensation To Kill a Kingdom, introduces her new book, The Night Hunt (Hot Key Books), a dark...
