Removing himself from the narrative as much as possible, Matthews has assembled a book that aims to replicate an oral storytelling tradition. The warmth and strength she gained from her family are strongly evoked, as are her feelings of bewilderment at the ignorance and racism they encountered. We're not quite there yet, but have made significant progress compared to when I said to my Play School producers in the early 1980s, 'Why can't we have illustrations with Black, Asian and Chinese characters on the screen?

Coming to England by Floella Benjamin, Diane Ewen - Waterstones

When she finished school she worked in a bank before becoming a singer, dancer, and then one of the most recognisable faces on television. When you first wrote Coming to England did you think of writing a picture book, as this was the age of children to whom you devoted the early part of your career? Another reason to read these books, which fill out the story of those who came to Britain in the first wave, and those who came after. We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute, we promise it will be put to good use. So a black child should see themselves in a book in a positive way: as an angel, as a superhero, as the boss.

They've all seen the Queen, and we had to find an element of how the story can come good, to give people hope. I was intrigued by the differences, including the tropical climate, in Trinidad – the opposite to cold England. Bernard’s poetry collection was written after investigating the New Cross Fire records during their residency at the George Padmore Institute, a centre dedicated to radical black history in Britain. Floella's dad was a musician who played the saxophone in a jazz band and when Floella was a teenager she started singing in the band, which she loved. Is this picture book version the kind of book you dreamt about reading when you were on Play School? From Una Marson, who arrived in Britain from Jamaica in 1932 and became an influential broadcaster at the BBC, to British-born women such as Shirley Bassey and Amanda Ira Aldridge, this is a wonderful exploration of black women’s lives in mid-20th century Britain.
