About this deal

Nominated for the main IF.COM Eddies (formerly Perrier award) at the Edinburgh Fringe for Rhod Gilbert and the Award-winning Mince Pie Many of Gilbert's stories are drawn from real life events, and his life in the wholly fictionalised village of Llanbobl. In 2008, Gilbert wrote a sitcom about life in Llanbobl, which featured on BBC Radio 2. [11] [12]

In 2011, he recorded a radio show for BBC Radio 2 called Rhod Gilbert's Bulging Barrel of Laughs with comedians Lloyd Langford, Greg Davies and Sarah Millican. Each show also featured live music from bands such as Athlete, Scouting for Girls, Kid British and The Hoosiers. It has since been repeated on BBC Radio 4 Extra. Gilbert married his long-term girlfriend, writer and comedian Sian Harries, in August 2013. They divide their time between London and Wales. [31] They have no children. In 2021 Gilbert took part in a documentary series about the stigma of male infertility. [32]

In July 2022, Gilbert announced he had been diagnosed with stage four cancer and was being treated at the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff, of which he is a patron. [35] [36] [37] He stated his pre-diagnosis symptoms had worsened while fundraising for Velindre in Cardiff, where he also contracted COVID-19. [37] He added: "I'm feeling happy, positive and optimistic. I'm feeling good and feel like I'm recovering day-by-day." However, he did say there might be more to come. He said: "Some days I'm well enough to do a bit of writing and I've got a feeling when I've got through all this there'll be a show in it.Rhod has written and presented two very personal documentaries. Rhod Gilbert: Stand Up To Shyness explored the huge impact that shyness has had had upon his life and was met with tremendous critical acclaim; earning nominations in the 2018 Bafta Cymru Awards for ‘Best Single Documentary’ and ‘Best Presenter’. His second documentary was another subject close to his heart; Rhod Gilbert: Stand Up To Infertility, explored his own experiences with fertility issues, and the subject of male fertility in general. The programme was nominated for ‘Best Single Documentary’ in the 2021 Bafta Cymru Awards. Rhod is now proudly working with the Fertility Network UK on an ongoing campaign to continue to raise awareness around the issue. I have every dvd he has made and personally rate him as one of the best British comedians of the last 20 years, consistently funnily, self deprecating and sometimes plain daft.

How Rhod is aiming to put Llanbobl on the map". Western Mail. 24 March 2008 . Retrieved 23 November 2009. A lot has changed since Rhod Gilbert began touring The Book of John in 2019 – a tour that still hasn’t come to an end. First it was interrupted by a pandemic. You may have heard about that. Then, in 2022, Gilbert had to pause the tour again with a persistent unexplained throat problem. Trekking Cuba to raise money for the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff, of which he is a longstanding patron, Gilbert discovered the problem was in fact cancer – for which he has been in treatment, at Velindre, since. “I’m sitting there having chemo,” he tells me, “with a picture of me on the wall as a fundraising patron. You couldn’t make it up, honestly.”From 2006 to 2019, Gilbert also fronted his own radio show, The Rhod Gilbert Radio Show, broadcast by BBC Radio Wales on Saturdays between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm, [29] often co-hosted by fellow Welsh Comedians Bennett Arron, Lloyd Langford or Chris Corcoran. [30] Personal life [ edit ] All of which gives Gilbert something to focus on as he navigates a challenging period. “All my work has gone. My social life has gone. Everything has gone. Everything. It’s just me and this bloody cancer, really.” The postponed final seven gigs of The Book of John tour are scheduled for 2023: “Having them is something to look forward to, really. But I’m making things sound very gloomy, and they’re not.” This show has Rhod returning to standup after a long hiatus from standup and features the tales from a period of his life during which he went through the death of a parent, infertility, being diagnosed with dyslexia, HDD and having a stroke. This all sounds like it would be a dark and depressing time but thanks to Rhods amazing way of finding the funny side of things it is far from becoming sad or depressing.

Hopefully I'm going to jot it all down and one day bring it to the stage."
