About this deal

I liked that this was set in a UK boarding school, although admittedly I had to constantly remind myself of this, as the story did feel very American.

Win Lose Kill Die by Cynthia Murphy | Waterstones

The chapters we are reading, the normal ones, don’t seem to indicate that she isn’t scared, that she knows who did it.Personally, i hate it when authors make plot twists like these where the tone of the entire book doesn’t add up and they just change it at the end. I’m guessing I would have enjoyed this more when I was a bit younger and had read less YA murder mysteries where there actually was a bit of an unpredictable story line and plot twist. year-old, Irish-born Niamh has just arrived for a summer of freedom, and quickly discovers that the girls being attacked look frighteningly similar to her.

She tries to combine this with contemporary settings in her writing to make unique and chilling modern stories. Classic 90s and 00s horror movies are definitely her pub quiz strong point and her first love may well have been Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The murders go from drowning to more and more gruesome and well, near the end it was pretty WTF and OMG and NOPE. Upper middle-grade/young adult mystery/crime thriller, Win Lose Kill Die by Cynthia Murphy (ages 13+) opens at the beginning of a new school year at Morton Academy, a school where students are selected based on academic excellence. When we got the initial killer chapter and then straight onto Liz, I was like this can’t be a coincidence.

She is looking forward to a fun filled summer of freedom, but things take a terrifying turn when she discovers the murdered body of another student in her hall of residence. is because I didn't get hooked as much as other books, fr me it just seemed like people kept dying and dying and I know that's intentional to keep the book fast paced but it just didn't hook me as much. In between these chapters, the narrative switches to the perspective of the person behind the mystery; chilling disclosures from the murderer, telling readers how the killing actions were planned and committed. Then in the villain parts we get certain phrases, phrases also said by Liz, and I knew my suspicions had to be right!

This was not what I expected it to be, I bought the book relying on all the reviews saying it had an amazing plot twist at the end, I love me some well written plot twists. We learn that Morton Hall has a somewhat scandalous history, and this is revealed to the reader as the students' investigation proceeds. There's Inej, an itinerant acrobat captured by slavers and sold to a brothel, now a spy for Kaz; the Grisha Nina, with the magical ability to calm and heal; Matthias the zealot, hunter of Grishas and caught in a hopeless spiral of love and vengeance with Nina; Wylan, the privileged boy with an engineer's skills; and Jesper, a sharpshooter who keeps flirting with Wylan. Her second novel, Win Lose Kill Die, was shortlisted for the KSC Book Award and was an Indie Bestseller in 2022. Throughout the book she attempts to unearth the identity of the mystery person behind these serial attacks with her new found best friend Jess, while juggling her college course, acting experience at the Victorian Street Museum and not to mention, getting Tommy, her gorgeous co-worker to ask her out. Liz's friends were easy to remember though, and I found myself really liking her love interest, Cole, especially as the romance was not heavy handed. Find out about the latest book in the 'Girl, Missing' series, Secret Sister, in this short video by author Sophie McKenzie. I think this was well told enough with good twists and turns that I would be interested in reading the author's other books, it's just not a particularly memorable story, so I can't see myself re-reading this one. Bardugo broadens the universe she created in the Grisha Trilogy, sending her protagonists around countries that resemble post-Renaissance northern Europe, where technology develops in concert with the magic that's both coveted and despised.
