About this deal

After the riots in 1982 more attention was paid to Brixton’s socioeconomic difficulties and its need for a voice. Roma Tearne is a Sri Lankan born artist living and working in Britain. She arrived, with her parents in this country at the age of ten. She trained as a painter, completing her MA at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford. For nearly twenty years her work as a painter, installation artist, and filmmaker has dealt with the traces of history and memory within public and private spaces. The mill produced flour with wind power from 1816 to 1862, when its sails were taken down and it was used as a storehouse. Her debut novel, Mosquito, featured an exiled Sri Lankan writer returning to the country and falling in love with a 17-year-old artist. Of all Tearne's work, this was the book that most directly engaged with the violence of the civil war, particularly the Tamil Tigers' deployment of female suicide bombers, who descended from the north like mosquitoes "but, unlike the mosquitoes, were full of a new kind of despair and frightening rage". Electric Avenue was the title of Eddy Grant’s song about the Brixton Riots, which became an international hit.

A dose of the real London, Brixton Market trades seven days a week from 08:00-19:00. The market is anchored on the pedestrianised Electric Avenue, but spills onto adjoining arcades that were built to provide permanent spaces for stallholders in the 20s and 30s. There’s always a buzzing atmosphere, no matter the time of day, and you can be certain you’ll have a great night at Hope & Anchor. Barrio Brixton is one of many fun and vibrant Latin American inspired Barrio Bars that have popped up around London in the last few years. Her descriptions of the 7 July 2005 London bombing, with which she starts the novel, are vivid -- but a mite predictable in how they are used.Brixton has always had pulsating nightlife, but since the 90s has come through as one of London’s best places to go out. In the Middle Ages, Brixham was the largest fishing port in the southwest of England, and was known as the 'Mother of Deep-Sea Fisheries'.

Throw on your best outfit, add in your favourite dancing shoes, and get ready to have the time of your life at this fantastic venue. Suffused with the sights, sounds and scents of Brixton Market, Electric Avenue is a street with a lot to say for itself. The paintings are labelled on Google Maps, so you can take a tour through Brixton’s not so distant past. And although the Afro-Caribbean community is still front and centre, the market is even more international and has over 130 independent traders.

This is the best thing that has ever happened to women in skateboarding. I have never seen such equal coverage [of male and female boarding].”
