About this deal

Without the army bonus, they're still S3 (and with no special strikes they'll always be stuck at S3), but they'd hit just that little bit harder - especially if the cavalry charged where Boromir wasn't (or where the pikes aren't if fighting Isengard). Here at Drawn Combat you'll find a range of blog articles, from tournament and list analysis, statistical deep dives, and noob-focussed guides and tutorials. Saruman lost very little with the rules "dumb down" - he lost Flameburst (which has its uses, but is usually worse to cast than Sorcerous Blast) and he can't Heroic Channel (which is just fine).

If your aim is to beeline to the Dunland Legendary Legion, then you’re better off just skipping the Battlehost completely and collecting Dunland from the ground up – which is actually what I did.

Optional Extras: Thrydan Wolfsbane is the obvious omission here and he is absolutely worth picking up, especially if you plan to eventually run the Dunland LL.

If you can’t beg / borrow / steal a scout from a friend, I’m sure most people would be happy with you using an Uruk-Hai warrior as a proxy.I get that there's a Warg Rider pack in there, so we NEED to have Orcs, but I think the better option might be to drop the Warg Riders (gasp) and the Witch-King (GASP! This battleforce contains 48 plastic Citadel miniatures for use in games of Middle-earth™ Strategy Battle Game and is an ideal way for existing players to bolster their forces, or for new collectors to get into the game. Disclaimer: I’ve recommended Wildmen and Dunlending Warriors, but it must be said that these boxes are absolutely terrible value.

You can use this box to build a Barad-Dur, Angmar or Mordor force and everything in the box can be used in each of those armies. Third, Gandalf lost Fortify Spirit, which won't do anything against the Rohan battlehost, but has HUGE implications for the Isengard and Mordor battlehosts. You’re getting two character packs and a command pack, so it isn’t very spendy, but it does give you a solid and fast infantry force (everything moves 8” and you have a drummer as well). Many of the profiles (as we'll see) got truncated too - this not only makes it so that the main rules content can be reduced to avoid talking about niche rules, but it also makes it so that the rules for each model are streamlined a lot more (and didn't keep rules that are great for theme, but would never be used in battlehost play). If you plan on passing over this list and going straight to Ugluk’s Scouts, you can probably forego the Quest of the Ringbearer book, too – although there is a lot of other fun stuff in there. It is worth carefully reading what each faction gets, as some choices cannot be used in some of the other factions. All told, if you were to trim Gandalf's spells down to 4 from the original 9, I think I'd remove Command from his retinue and give him Fortify Spirit instead. Similarly an Assault on Helm’s Deep Legendary Legion, which plays well at the higher points totals, would take the armoured Uruk Hai as a core.

You can probably optimise it by including more siege bows and crossbows, but this is a great starting point and will do well on the table. Keep your eyes peeled - this is the first blog in the series and we will be following up with our next Battlehost shortly. Gondor has a lot of cheap heroes, and a number of elite infantry options (Citadel Guard, Guardians of the Fountain Court, Osgiliath Veterans where you are using Faramir or Boromir) which give you access to Fight 4, which you absolutely want to make sure you win fights against Orcs. Allies add some good variety to Gondor forces, with the Fiefdoms being the obvious choice to add a warband from. As with Saruman and Gandalf (spoiler alert), the Witch-King gets a subset of his original spells (only Transfix, Compel, and Black Dart - all with their normal 12" range and cast on a 3+, 4+, and 5+ respectively, per the usual). The new Lord of the Rings starter gives you Gothmog, a Mordor Troll and 24 Morannon Orcs, which clocks in at about 435 points, and so makes a logical companion, with the only real need being some more characters to lead troops (Mordor Orc Commanders or Morannon Orc Commanders being the obvious packs to get) as Gothmog and the Witch King can lead 15 model warbands, and you’ve got a lot more than 30 models. Pure Isengard is just as fun and competitive as any LL, and gives you by far the most versatility, as well as access to some units that you're locked out of otherwise.
