Wimbledon - quite simply the highlight of the global tennis calendar, Wimbledon is also the oldest tennis tournament in the world, having been held at the All England Club in London since 1877. The Wimbledon tournament takes place over two weeks in late June and early July, culminating with the Ladies' and Gentlemen's Singles Final. It's walking down the memory lane on the most nostalgic heritage of the English countryside. It featured personal reminiscence by various notable people commemorating the most meaningful aspect of rural life.

Did I regret reading this? No. It gave me ideas regarding the off the beaten path to discover England. It would make a good companion for those intended to explore off the trail attractions. I got better glances on rural customs and learned of landmarks I never knew existed (like Hadrian's Wall), through their writings. It’s a popular gathering place, especially among tourists, beneath two well-known landmarks of London – the winged figure of Anteros (often mistakenly called Eros) on the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain and the giant plasma screens constantly playing adverts and shortfilms. 7. The TowerOfLondon The White Tower at dusk But why a mythical creature as your national animal? The story goes that Vortigern a Celtic King needed a spot to build a new castle. He found a spot ideal in Snowdonia. But one day a young boy appeared and warned him that he shouldn’t build it where he wanted to. The boy claimed that there was an underground lake with two sleeping dragons below. This young boy was thought to be a young wizard named Merlin. Vortigern ignored the boy and as his men dug they came across two dragons fighting. Spellbound they watched as the red dragon defeated the white dragon. This is now said to represent Vortigern’s people and then the Welsh. Piccadilly Circus is a busy junction between two of themost famous streets in London,Shaftesbury Avenue and Piccadilly.

Often when we hear the name of the UK we imagine rain. I expected to read about the poor weather in almost every story, but I was pleasantly surprised. Instead, I read about trees with ancient history, small islands with beautiful flora, bizarre signs in pubs and beautiful parks. From time to time I would stop and open Google looking for the place in question, which was discussed in the story I was reading. I marked out places to visit when I manage to get there.

Apparently it was originally a coffee-table book, where I guess the text is something you only glance at uncritically while swooning over the luscious photography. The pictures, needless to say, are absent from this edition, (though I’m not sure what possible image could have accompanied the piece about discovering that country folk are more friendly than Londoners.)

A collection of short stories about different places, things and people that mean something to someone who is patriotically British. In its completion the book isn’t incredibly interesting, though some of the personal stories are cute and provide insight into casual British life and thinking.
