About this deal

To activate means to start, to get a reaction going. A compost activator should therefore help get things started. There are several types of activators and we go through each below. Popular compost starters/accelerators on the market include The Vitax Compost Maker (powder); J Arthur’s Garotta (powder); seaweed and seaweed extracts (liquids and powder); Bio-tal (liquid); Neudorff (powder); and sachets of enzymes, microbes, or herbs (e.g., QR). If you add an accelerator and do nothing more, other than agitation through tumbling or aerator probing, you may be disappointed with what you see. When fresh green waste is subjected to the level of bacterial influx that happens when we use these accelerators the reaction is fast.

The general advice is to dilute the urine with 4 water to 1 urine. This isn’t so necessary if you are putting it on compost but you definitely will need to dilute it if you are tempted to use it as a liquid fertiliser. Raw urine is tends to be very strong. If you deliver undiluted urine onto a small area then you risk killing the plant that you are trying to grow. Never add cooked food of any kind as this can attract vermin. Shred or cut waste into smaller pieces where possible, especially woody stems. Composting is usually a straightforward and successful process, but occasionally the results may not be ideal, such as: A compost starter/accelerator is a product that jumpstarts and speeds up the process of decomposition in your compost pile. It usually contains nitrogen, microorganisms, or herbs recommended for biodynamic decay.Compost can take a long time to create from your home organic waste. If you do not add much to your compost pile or bin then you can be in for a long wait of many months. However, there are some companies that have made 'compost accelerators' which speed this process up. We explore some below. Envii Compost Accelerator Used correctly biochar can have a tremendous positive impact on soil health and plant growth. In recent years, adding biochar to compost has become the recommended way to "activate" biochar and help ensure success. Think of raw biochar as a dry sponge. To activate it, (i.e. charge the biochar with water and plant nutrients), it needs to soak in the compost. When you add the SoilFixer humification agent, not only do you increase colloidal humus, and improve composting, as biochar is 80% of the CHA (SoilFixer humification agent) mix, you are activating and adding biochar to your soil. Using CHA you make a DIY version of SF60 - our Biochar Super Compost. La Sede / Exposiciones permanentes / Sala de Pascual Duarte II". Fundacioncela.com (in Spanish). Archived from the original on 14 April 2009 . Retrieved 16 September 2009. Garden compost can take between six months and two years to reach maturity. Larger quantities of material tend to compost more efficiently, but smaller bins, while slower, should still produce good results. Mixing the contents regularly will also help to make the process more efficient. Composting tends to be faster in warm weather and slows down over winter.

Besides being good for your garden, hot composting is good for you, too. Making a batch takes about three weeks, and every few days you will get a full body workout forking and turning your smouldering compost, which is way more fun than going to the gym. Hot Composting Basics Your first option would be to take a few shovels of an already decomposed compost pile and add it to your new one. A mix that is close to completing the decay process will work effectively, too.

Natural-nitrogen activators

You will often see urine (pee) listed as a compost activator. We are highly dubious of the real value of adding pee to compost. Urine has a tiny amount of urea, which in turn has tiny amounts of nitrogen. If you are hot composting - the addition of +99% water (which takes heat to remove it as steam) is negative. In a cold composting system, if the heap is very dry urine is OK. If the heap is damp, it compounds aeration issues. Our expertise says those seeing really positive impact probably have compost bins that were too dry and the water is improving the process.

Regular compost heaps can take up to 12 months to produce any usable compost. Compost Accelerator speeds up the process by naturally increasing the compost heap to give you quality compost in as little as 3 weeks. There are then a number of what we call limiting factors that can limit or totally prevent decomposition. For example: if you have no nitrogen (or not enough) the reaction cannot proceed. Ifyou have no micronutrients in your waste, some of the bacterial enzymes cannot be made/proceed. If you have no oxygen or water aerobic composting cannot proceed or can be limited. For every gardener, compost is a very vital commodity – it is the gold that gets your plants to grow and thrive. Most gardeners prefer using compost on their crops, since it is organic.

How and When to Turn a Hot Compost Pile

Unfortunately the delivery company will be unable to remove items from the pallet or take the pallet away with them and delivery will be made to the kerbside. There are boxes and bags of powders that contain a ‘magic’ ingredient with a claim that it will accelerate the composting process, but do they really? I’ve used one of these accelerators called ‘Garotta’ but I’m a little mystified about what is actually in it and what is a compost accelerator? Mycelium: Mushrooms contain a vast network of mycelium. During the expansion of this network, enzymes that decompose into primary nutrients and sugars are released. These nutrients feed your plants and accelerate their growth. Even in conditions not favorable for decomposition, the mycelium in fungi can still get the job done.

For every 10C increase in bin temperature, the speed doubles, ie takes half the time to decompose. Heat will reduce the time by a factor of X8, X16, or x32 times faster. Minerals: Rich in phosphorus, potassium, and copper, mushrooms are a great source of minerals. Research has found that mushrooms contain more potassium than a glass of orange juice. When you add mushrooms to your pile, these minerals become part of it. You later add the decayed matter to your plants, feeding them with these vital minerals. When you add these products to your lazy garden compost pile, you provide the right carbon to nitrogen ratio (30:1). Garotta is harmless to children, pets and wildlife and its fast acting nature can help you produce your very own natural garden compost. If you add nothing to your compost and rely completely on the forces of nature, then there is one thing that you must do to accelerate composting of green waste. Do what you can to get air into it. The best system of all, for this, is the compost tumbler. These are designed to keep turning over the mass. Every time you roll over a compost tumbler you are going to open up any lumps and allow air in.Garden compost can also be used tomake potting compost, when combined with other ingredients such as soil – see our guide to making your own potting compost. Green– this is usually soft, leafy material, including grass clippings, sappy green plants (such as annual weeds), crop waste, old fruit and vegetables and kitchen peelings. These materials are rich in nitrogen
