About this deal

Like all technology, electronic stud finders have seen many improvements from the time they appeared on the construction market in the 1990s. To pinpoint the location of a stud, an electronic stud finder uses sensors that detect a mass behind the wall. They may come with a single sensor, in which case they will detect only the edge of a stud, or they may come with multiple sensors, giving them the ability to detect both edges as well as the center of the stud. Both single sensor and multiple sensor stud finders perform well on average. Sensor Size Stud finders are essential for DIYers when hanging items or mapping out any project on one of your home’s walls. In addition to choosing between magnetic and electronic stud finders, think about each product’s battery life and additional features. We put together the following buying guide to help you examine the most important features when choosing a stud finder. Type of Stud Finder

Automatic calibration allows for easy, fast detection; requires very little user participation to detect studs Look For Nails or Screws: Studs are often found where pictures, mirrors, shelves etc. have been mounted previously on your walls. The nails or screws likely went into a stud, so you should be able to locate one in that area. With the screw still off, take the battery cover off and place the tool flat on a table. Carefully take the top case off to reveal the circuit board inside. Make sure everything is aligned correctly and looks square. This simple stud finder uses a powerful magnet instead of battery-powered sensors to identify studs, making it our top choice for magnetic stud finders. The magnet’s plastic casing is easy to hold and won’t mar or scratch the surface of the wall. Since it has no batteries or moving parts, the stud finder is always ready to use.

Analysis and Test Results

Drywall installations use 48-inch-wide pieces, so a wall will almost always have studs evenly spaced inside that length. Sometimes you can even see the intersecting angles of different sheets or finishing lines if you look carefully at a large section of wall or shine a flashlight along it. To stand out, manufacturers will add features of varying degrees of usefulness. These bonus features can vary from being neigh-on essential (at least, for you) to being expensive price boosters. If you already have one of the best home tool kits, you will likely find yourself not needing too many extras on your stud finder. Fortunately, even plaster wall surfaces still use metal fasteners holding them to the studs, so you can usually find studs with a strong neodymium magnet or a purpose-built magnetic stud finder like the Studbuddy.

Electronic stud finders are more precise at locating studs than magnetic ones. They feature either an LED screen or indicator lights that can pinpoint the edges of a stud and the exact center. Deep scan mode: When your wall is covered with lath and plaster or stucco this mode will help you find studs more accurately than a regular stud finder could. And operating it, too, can be an issue due to low levels of instruction. However, once you know its secrets, you can use it easily. The Craftsman Stud Finder detects edges only and doesn’t work well when started on a stud. Move the Craftsman Stud Finder from the left of the stud you want to the right. It’ll light up when the left side of the stud is found. Then, do the same from the right side, moving to the left. What to consider before buying the best stud finders

How Stud Finders Work

Why it made the cut: This is a relatively straightforward stud finder without the frills (or the price) of premium-grade finders. Other than that, this device also comes outfitted with a muti-sense tech, meaning that it can detect multiple 'threats' at once. Rounding its features lineup is the automatic calibration function, making sure that you can use this thing without calibrating it manually first.

If you get strange readings, like detected studs that are too close together or no studs at all, try calibrating in a different starting spot to see if you accidentally calibrated on top of an object inside the wall. After three passes you should be able to determine a precise stud center line by drawing a vertical line through your marks with a level for reference, but you can probably get it on the first try if you’re seeing clear readings. When you’re happy with the consistency of the marks you’ve made, you can measure and mark the exact height of the fastener you need to install. The Zircon MetalliScanner m40 handles an increasingly rare situation—dense plaster walls—better than its competition. Plaster walls, which fell out of usage after the 1940s, present a unique situation for other stud finder sensors as these walls are intensely dense all the way through. That makes studs hard to locate with typical methods. An ergonomic hand grip makes holding and moving the stud finder easier and is available on both magnetic and electronic models. Some stud finders require depressing a button before scanning the wall for studs. When choosing one of these models, look for a button that’s located in a comfortable spot to both press the button and control the movement of the tool. As the stud finder crosses the stud, most will show you an indicator when you’re over the center. You should mark this point the same way you did the edge.

Feature Highlights

StudScan Mode locates center, edges, and direction of wood and metal studs up to ¾ in. (19 mm) deep FILTERz™ technology cancels metallic objects, such as metal studs and copper pipe, and low density objects, such as plastic, PEX, and plumbing All electronic stud finders use sensors to measure the change in density in the wall. Typically, you must place the stud finder on a part of the wall without studs to ensure it gets calibrated before sliding it across the wall to find studs. Once the finder locates a stud, the results are displayed on an LCD screen. Studs are the strips of wood beneath the drywall that function as the wall’s frame. If you’ve ever seen a house being built, you can recall the wood frame– sort of like a house’s skeleton. Most buildings have vertical studs spaced 16 inches apart. Electronic stud finders work to locate the edges of these studs through interior walls up to ¾” deep so that you can securely hang items up to 100 pounds.
