An unfortunate run of events in short succession some years ago led to two major road accidents due to cars pulling out in front of Allan. On my first go, I pulled the Instax Mini Evo up to my eye only to realize there is no optical viewfinder below the cold shoe or in the corner like it is in every Mini Instax camera. Not only can certain images be selected for print after reviewing first; an amount of image editing can also be undertaken and effects added in-camera. If you want to quickly share snaps to social media then this can be a real annoyance, and it means the only way to get non-printed images off the camera is via the microSD card.
His first taste of Hillclimbing was when he was persuaded to take the drag race Mini to Olivers Mount Hillclimb in Scarborough. Only a few of these buttons are labelled, though, which might leave newcomers unsure of what to press. Opt for instax-Rich Mode for a bright and immersive look, or instax-Natural Mode for a cool and classic finish, either way you can capture it all, then print what you love.
Despite having a highly capable camera in my pocket at all times, I rarely print my smartphone images and so I had a lot of fun scrolling through my gallery and porting over pictures to print. You can swap between retro, mirrored, double exposure, soft focus, fish-eye, and other creative lenses to spice up your photos. They don’t stand up on their own when viewed on a computer screen, and certainly aren’t ones you’re likely to want to keep or use for any other purpose than for printing in the small Instax size.

The Instax Mini Evo app can be used for remote shooting (with live view), editing photos before printing, and transferring photos from the camera to your phone.Tack on the ability to print photos straight from your smartphone and the Evo is a very attractive photography gadget. We're a little disappointed to see the older connection type on a new camera, but the box includes a charging cable, so we can't complain too much. It weighs about 10 ounces without any film—a pack of 10 Instax Mini prints adds another ounce or so.
The Instax Mini Evo is a more vintage looking camera than the "fun" LiPlay, which has a much more modern design that's available in three different colours. Nobody will mistake it for a high-end Leica, but it's easy to see the inspiration for the camera's aesthetics when you place it beside a chrome rangefinder.Additionally, none of the Evo's creative filters or colors are available when you use the remote camera controls—it's a workable, but underwhelming, implementation. The front of the camera is rather sparse, with a power switch, shutter button and small selfie mirror surrounding the lens barrel, which can be twisted to cycle between lens modes. In fact, 10 integrated lens modes and 10 film modes can provide up to 100 different effects when combined, going some way to both ape and combat the image editing apps on our smartphones, should we want to. Allan started to dabble in the bigger Hillclimb meetings from the start of his involvement in the sport.
