Richard Verrier (February 13, 2013). " 'Bukowski' plays role in modest rise for local film production". Los Angeles Times . Retrieved July 17, 2014. a view of humanity that is cynical" https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2007/sep/05/bukowski Bukowski often spoke of Los Angeles as his favorite subject. In a 1974 interview he said, "You live in a town all your life, and you get to know every bitch on the street corner and half of them you have already messed around with. You've got the layout of the whole land. You have a picture of where you are.... Since I was raised in L.A., I've always had the geographical and spiritual feeling of being here. I've had time to learn this city. I can't see any other place than L.A." [24] Heke Bukowskî jî bî, dema ku mirin nêzik be, nikarî evê pişt guhê xwe fire bidî...Jiyan bi hemu xweşî û nexweşî wanê digehîte dawîyê. divê tu ji trênê peya bî, bê peyda kirina manaya jînê...Mirin wanê tê û Bukowskî ku bo kêf û zewq, kun bi kun di nav lingên jin û keçan de digerîya, niha do kuna jiyanê digere; Qemî bikare çûka şîn peyda bike...dizane tukes peyda nekirîye, lê do digere ku paşî tenêtî de bêje dilê xwe "ez gerîyam belam peyda nebû...lo dilo xem nebe, were bîreyek mêvanê min be ku heya kuna dawî çi nemaye..." Bluebird" is claimed to be the first country song inspired by Charles Bukowski to reach Number 1. [48]

Writers including John Fante, [34] Knut Hamsun, [34] Louis-Ferdinand Céline, [34] Ernest Hemingway, [35] Robinson Jeffers, [35] Henry Miller, [34] D. H. Lawrence, [35] Fyodor Dostoevsky, [35] Du Fu [35] Li Bai, [35] and James Thurber are noted as influences on Bukowski's writing. Plot-wise that’s about all you really need to know about Pulp, but if plot and character development are what you’re after in a book, then this one probably isn’t for you. Many times throughout his career Bukowski was quoted as saying “genius might be the ability to say a profound thing in a simple way.” This austere philosophy of writing is perhaps most succinctly put by the pithy epitaph adorning his tombstone: DON’T TRY. Whether Bukowski was a genius himself, or whether his final piece of advice should apply to all writers – these are subjects for another time. The point here is that, like Hemingway at his best, Bukowski managed to provoke a breadth and depth of intellectual and emotional responses in his work using only a sparse economy of words and dialogue, and Pulp is no exception.US heavy metal band W.A.S.P in their 1992 album "The Crimson Idol" used one line of Bukowski's poem, "Some People". American post-hardcore band Chiodos named their second album after one of Bukowski's books of poetry, Bone Palace Ballet. Bukowski published extensively in small literary magazines and with small presses beginning in the early 1940s and continuing on through the early 1990s.

Bukowski had troubled relationships with women. He felt that many of his lovers were bad for him. Yet, he couldn't help but feel attracted to them and desire their company. Lady Death is simultaneously beautiful and repulsive, representing the many relationships of Bukowski. The Red Sparrow British-American rapper MF Doom referred to Bukowski as inspiration for his songs, featuring a Bukowski poem in one of his songs, "Cellz", off of his 2009 album, of which the title was a reference to Bukowski's poem "Dinosauria, We": Born Like This. [43] I love the book and have just re-read it. I had read it when it first came out in 1994. I love the dialogue. I love the odd plot which is more like Altman's Short Cuts than Pulp Fiction. I do not like the end, but appreciate it. Death can happen suddenly as it does in the book. There was nothing solid (Except Lady Death hanging around him a lot) to predict it. Then again, someone can have a great day at work, hang out with the kids and have a great time fishing, have a great dinner and then have a plane fall on you. It does not have to follow a storyline.Bukowski's poem "Let It Enfold You", published in Betting on the Muse: Poems and Stories (1996), [50] influenced the emotional 2004 Senses Fail song (and album) of the same name. [51] There's Gonna Be a God Damn Riot in Here” was released as a CD devoted to his last international performance [October 1979 in Vancouver, British Columbia]. Bukowski's poem "Let It Enfold You" is read by Timothée Chalamet's character in the 2018 film Beautiful Boy. [57] Duval Jean-François (2002). Bukowski and the Beats followed by An Evening at Buk's Place: an Interview with Charles Bukowski. Sun Dog Press. ISBN 0-941543-30-7.

This should not be the first or only Bukowski you read, and it is not his best work, but my basic three star rating of this book adds a star because of the laugh-out load humor he faces death with. I like and admire that. With your logic you might as well say John Barton was the cause of his death because he asked Belane to find the red sparrow and Belane accepted the job. Or maybe Belane caused his own death by accepting the job? Pulp is a pulp fiction novel which acts also as a meta-pulp. Pulp comments on the obsessions of the pulp fiction genre, making fun of itself as stereotypical of the genre in the grimiest form. Bukowski also performed live readings of his works, beginning in 1962 on radio station KPFK in Los Angeles and increasing in frequency through the 1970s. Drinking was often a featured part of the readings, along with a combative banter with the audience. [36] Bukowski could also be generous; for example, after a sold-out show at Amazingrace Coffeehouse in Evanston, Illinois, on November 18, 1975, he signed and illustrated over 100 copies of his poem "Winter," published by No Mountains Poetry Project. By the late 1970s, Bukowski's income was sufficient to give up live readings. Man was born to die. What did it mean? Hanging around and waiting. Waiting for the “A train.” Waiting for a pair of big breasts on some August night in a Vegas hotel room. Waiting for the mouse to sing. Waiting for the snake to grow wings. Hanging around.
