I have never been very interested in the crime genre, both fiction and non-fiction. That being said, I could not put this book down (figuratively, since I listened to it). This book was recommended to me by my cousin, and even though it is non-fiction it read like a novel. It's crazy thinking that this is actually the story of someone's life. The book is focused primarily on Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal, the notorious casino strongman and "skimmer" who, with the help of Frank Culotta, Tony Spilotro, and others managed to make himself and the Chicago outfit a fortune with his thumb on the gambling operations at The Sands and The Fremont during the 1970's.

Roulette Royale is the latest game release at Tangiers Casino. It’s an exciting, fast-paced game that is sure to excite and entertain players of all levels of experience! With stunning graphics and realistic sounds, you’ll feel like you’re right in the middle of the action! Another problem that I had with this novel is it didn’t really flow into an easy-to-understand story. Pileggi throws so many stories from so many people into his narrative, and many of them don’t really even take place in a casino or even Las Vegas. This book seems more of anecdotal recollection of many of the mob personalities that are closely related to the key players. Again, the movie tended to do this, but when you have a master like Martin Scorsese, he can take all of this jumbled information and still tell a decent story while making sense out of all of muddled stories and episodes that are randomly thrown at us. I never really felt like there was any linear progression here, and when you did see relationships progress (such as the love triangle between Lefty, Tony, and Geri) it’s told in such a haphazard fashion, that a lot of the emotion the reader should feel simply isn’t there. De Niro’s recent credits include Joker for Warners as well as Scorsese’s The Irishman, which he starred in and produced for Netflix. He reteamed with Scorsese once more for Apple’s Killers of the Flower Moon, due out next year. Jake is a resource and utilities writer at Collider and, as a film graduate, loves all things media. As a professional scriptwriter and director with a Masters degree in the former, his documentary and fiction shorts have taken him across his home country of the United Kingdom to many film festivals, with his writing not limited to the screen but also translating onto the stage.People don't stop watching and reading shit and some of them writing shit... but some are very good writers... some movies are marvelous and make great impact in people's life.

So, if like me, you’ve seen the film multiple times, is it worth reading the book? Probably not. It’s good but the overwhelming sense of familiarity makes it all feel very recognisable. That said, if you really love the film then you will inevitably still get quite a lot out of reading the book including quite a lot of interesting detail about what the authorities did leading up to Henry Hill's arrest, and the aftermath of his entry into the Federal Witness Program. Other times, the author includes things such as entire transcripts of police reports, entire court transcriptions, and entire news stories verbatim. Probably the highlight (emotion wise) of the book is when Lefty and Geri are having their last fight and she’s screaming at him outside of their house while loaded on drugs. Yet right in the middle of this drama, Pileggi haphazardly includes the arrest report and it seems to throw the drama off too much. I mean, I could understand the author including this arrest report as a postscript at the end of the chapter, but why include it right in the middle of the event as he’s describing it?

The book also covers Rosenthal's stormy marriage with Las Vegas Showgirl Geri McGee and her affairs. He’s right. When Hill is sent to a cushy jail where he and other wise guys have the freedom to cook elaborate dinners every night, it’s an enormously revealing detail that he would mention the sauce having too much onion in it. The personality that would remember this years later, and still be so annoyed about it as to bring it up in an interview, is at the heart of what attracted Scorsese to this material in the first place. This is an overrated book. But don't worry, all is not lost. It just needs to be re-purposed and moved into a different genre. Warners’ first original feature of the Warner Bros. Discovery era is here … and it’s a period mobster drama fronted by two Hollywood veterans. If you asking what type of shit is happing around Las Vegas... Casinos... here you can find the truth... the question is easy do you have the guts?"

Goodfellas (1990) Awards". Movies & TV Dept. The New York Times. 2013. Archived from the original on 2013-09-21.At the age of twelve my ambition was to become a gangster. To be a wiseguy. Being a wiseguy was better than being President of the United States. To be a wiseguy was to own the world." -- Henry Hill Part of me wishes that I had read this book, which directly inspired Goodfellas, without having seen or even having any knowledge of the movie. There’s so much about Goodfellas that seems outrageous and over-the-top and made up, so it was almost weird to learn that Henry Hill was a real person, and that everything he describes in his memoir actually happened. Having seen the movie created this weird mental disconnect where even though I knew I was reading a memoir, it still felt kind of like a novel. (It also doesn’t help that the narration in Goodfellas is practically lifted word-for-word from the text of Hill’s memoir, to the point where I hope he got a screenwriter’s credit for the movie) Nicholas Pileggi's non fiction book, ' Wiseguy', is the basis for the film, GoodFellas, directed by Martin Scorsese (1990). It's the true story of Henry Hill, a member of the Lucchese organised crime family in New York. Henry's heyday takes place during the 1960s and 1970s when he works under the protection of mob boss Paul Vario in the Brownsville-East New York section of Brooklyn.
