About this deal

Designed with kids in mind, this book does it all - relatable illustrations, captions, text features, and more. But the text quickly becomes a blur of numbers and facts – and Shelagh Armstrong’s double-page spreads are unlikely to energize or focus young readers: with their monotonous compositions and colours, stylized landscapes, and faceless people, her paintings quickly become tedious.

It addresses nationalities, languages, ages, religion, food distribution, clean air and drinking water, education, money, electricity, and historical and projected data. I read this aloud to my 6 year old daughter, (she just turned 6) and she's not quite at the point where she really understood that 100 people were representing all the people. Helps children (and adults) catch a glimpse of what life is like around the world by imagining there are 100 people and then telling how many of them have enough food to eat, where they live, what languages they speak, etc. Working in this way provides more cross-curricular opportunities because there may be a need to make invitations, issue tickets, serve refreshments, run a cloakroom, carry out security checks and much else besides! The 2nd Edition of the bestselling book which has sold over 400 000 copies in 17 languages -- updated with new content and insights about the world's people.Activity 2 Then I asked the children to complete some data handling sessions where they could apply what they had learnt. I think the book's purpose is two-fold, to create an understanding of the variety of people and situations in the world and to encourage an interest in them and their plight. The book If the world were a village is a good book and recommend it for teaching kids about the problems of the world and hope you enjoy this book as much as I do.

Once the data are presented in a physical/visual way, you might ask each group to prepare a little 'fact-sheet' about their data so that 'visitors' to the class 'gallery' can understand what they're looking at. who are we, where we live, how fast we are growing, what languages we speak, what religions we practice, etc. This book would be great for use in mathematics, geography, history, RE, design technology and a lot more! If the world were a village” is a children’s book that maps the world’s population onto a village of just 100 people, and explores the lives of the villagers… to discover that life in other countries is often very different from our own. For a lot of children it might be hard to imagine the vast amount of people that populate the world. And I have learned by experience that –although people are people wherever you go– audiences may have divergent habits and react differently to what you say and what you do. That number is remarkably difficult to grasp, for adults or children, but this book attempts to make it easier to relate to by imagining that population in a village of only 100 people.
