About this deal

References in the text are made to pages in the psalter, but how does one then seek out the illustration without having to go through the whole book from beginning to end in the hope that there is a reproduction somewhere of the relevant reference? I am not in a position to comment about the veracity of the facts about the Luttrell's family background in the midlands of England, but I must admit to being worried when early on the author refers to Charing Cross being named after the Eleanor cross that was erected there following the death of Edward I's queen in 1290: the place-name Cyrringe is dated to c.

I became very annoyed at this and so compiled my own index of psalter pages that are illustrated in the book, but I should not have had to do this! Please note shipments to the Highlands and Islands may require shipment by courier and may be more expensive. well, that's not quite true because there are a few pages at the end with music on them, but that in itself is pretty decorative. Brown reveals that knowledge of Luttrell and the book's audience is as important to understanding the work's meaning as its striking imagery.Card payments can be made in person at our premises but must be accompanied by relevant ID confirming address details. The binding by Smith Settle of Otley is in Nigerian goatskin leather blocked with a design by David Eccles, with handmade endpapers from the Fabriano mill.

At the very end of the book, the finer and more technical aspects are listed, such as provenance, textual contents, codicology and the artists with their division of labour. Psalters were books for personal devotion containing a calendar, the Psalms, and additional prayers, collects, and the Office of the Dead, though the contents could vary depending on what the patron wished to be included. The Luttrell Psalter is one of the most comprehensive visual resources concerning medieval everyday life. But equally, the language can become daunting in places: for example on page 31, there is a sentence comprising 106 words.
