About this deal

This book is similar; for the first half of the book it appears like one sort of book (a conspiracy and war) only to have weird monsters occasionally show themselves starting at about the halfway point(Lovecraft). He finds himself thrown again into the world of politics, shadowy puppet masters, and potential war, and must find the allies he needs to discover his mother’s killers and their motives. The only arena in Ereptia sat a few hundred people, and just a third of the seats were full for an afternoon exhibition match. I really enjoyed Thessa’s side of the story and what she brought to the table with who she was and even moreso her Godglass forging skills and knowledge.

It has intriguing magic, amazing world-building, charismatic characters and especially enjoy the surprising twist at the end and the awesome cliffhangers. This book has multiple battle scenes, told from the perspective of a general planning out an offensive.

Instead, the main selling point is how it transforms ordinary characters into something beautiful and deadly. My rating is just because I know the author could do better, that's why I cannot wait for the next installment. In recent years, Brian McClellan has made it a habit to release spectacular books, each one with a unique magic system.

He chose the latter only to find the world truly in disarray and its most valuable resource godglass is running out. It has been three years since Brian McClellan concluded his Powder Mage universe series with Blood of Empire, the third and final book in his God of Blood and Powder trilogy. I have only read one novella by the author and I loved it so I was excited to give his longer works a shot. The author's idea is that glass making is coming to an end and thus the economy is going to fall apart but I didn't really feel that the world is better off with it or that the stakes of it disappearing would frankly really matter after the initial shock. I had genuine interest in what was going on, and wanted to follow what was happening with various characters. His storyline only really became relevant during the last 30%, and its inclusion before that point unnecessarily slowed the primary plot. Fortunately, he sticks it out and ends up finding himself / finding clarity on the battlefield again. The story feels unique and fresh, the world is well crafted, and the magic system - while a bit similar to some others I have read - was enjoyable. We welcome respectful dialogue related to speculative fiction in literature, games, film, and the wider world. Perhaps the abundance of characters meant that not all could have action-orientated narratives or that this novel needed time to build for the latter books in the series.

Though I enjoyed reading from the perspective of a female enforcer named Kizzie the most, I found that all of the characters, including her, were more examples of archetypes and tropes than actual developed characters. Now that she’d been snuffed out he cursed himself for not visiting more—and for failing to live up to her expectations for a child prodigy. She says she found the twists predictable, but what I truly suspect is that her aversion for action and battle scenes came to the fore- she tends to skim these parts! In the Shadow of Lightning introduces a magic system similar to, yet vastly removed from his flintlock Powder system of Powder Mage and Gods of Blood and Powder. In some ways it was pure Brian McClellan, but it also held a lot of surprises, and alas, some disappointments as well.
