About this deal

Again, I don’t see the relevance… I suspect this is due to your misunderstanding of what a network radio is. Does a person need to have any real technical know how to key up on a MD380 ? No… They don’t… But depending on how and what they want to use it on they might… A bit like network radio really.. ;-) A cookie set by YouTube to measure bandwidth that determines whether the user gets the new or old player interface.

Your editor has had the foresight to take this growing format on board, and I will look more closely at developments in this new arena.Tim G4VXE has used the London Underground Wi-Fi and found that it worked well; you could even transmit on a cross-channel ferry; indeed, you can do so from anywhere you can connect to the Internet. This is partly because app developers collect their revenues via the Play Store. Furthermore, apps like Google Play Store are not designed to work standalone, so even if you tried to sideload it, it just wouldn’t work (I tried, much to Filip’s amusement).

For the non amateur think of it as well behaved CB with worldwide coverage or Private 1 to 1 calls! Above all, I wish to encourage all of you to give this system a good try-out. With no transmitting license needed and even just by using your mobile phone, you can have an authentic taste of network radio and judge it for yourself. Mind you, it is so much better with a dedicated network device in the radio form-factor. Radio signals of all frequencies, in theory, only propagate via line-of-sight. None go much further than the horizon unless, of course, they are enhanced in some way. To do that operators need a little assistance. When I holidayed in Europe years ago, I took my Sony ICF-7600SW to listen to short wave broadcasts, exploiting the vagaries of ionospheric propagation. By contrast, today I use my smartphone with a Bluetooth speaker (internet propagation) and the quality is first rate! No fading, no static, no noise. All radio products are tested against rivals in the same price category, and all review verdicts are agreed upon by the team as a whole rather than an individual reviewer, again helping to ensure consistency and avoid any personal preference. We test not only the raw audio quality of internet radio (and FM and DAB) but all its advertised features from Bluetooth connectivity to streaming support to the alarms and presets. Not only the technical progress is visible, but also the variety of online offers available has increased. The classic range of FM stations has been joined by an extensive array of web radio. Nowadays, almost every FM station offers an online radio stream as well, so it can be heard everywhere and independent of conventional frequencies. On the rear too, is the DC power connector, which is arguably the least ‘heavy-duty’ part of the radio. It feels a little flimsy to me, though it never let me down, so I cannot complain. You can use your existing smartphone device; this is, in fact, a great way to try out the system for starters. But it is not dissimilar to comparing apples to oranges; they are both fruit but differ in taste. There are thousands of Zello channels, but the most popular ones for our use (at least so far) are in the Network Radios suite.
