About this deal

If you’re an electric guitar player you may not be used to a thinner string but it’s worth considering the tension on the guitalele’s neck. We probably wouldn’t recommend going much higher than a 9 gauge in this case due to the string tension. I don't know if many of you have ever had the chance to play a Kanile'a GL6 but they are all a much welcome addition to any high end ukulele/guitar collection.

Hi, I’m Harrison, and my team and I use Student of Guitar to share all we are learning about the guitar. So on your GL1, they would likely give you a bit lower tension ADGCEA or possibly allow you to tune a little higher is you wanted.BTW, going back to my 650/52 after an afternoon with this 432/48 GL-1, my full size CG felt absurdly large!

The good news is that strings for this type of guitalale are extremely easy to get hold of – you just need to grab a pair of electric guitar steel strings! With medium tension, they won’t exert too much stress on your guitalele, or fingers, but are excellent for staying in tune. Alice has been producing quality strings for many years, which are known for durability and reliability. The higher-pitched guitalele tuning is why the guitalele strings are usually lighter than those used on a guitar. They had a lovely warm bassy tone to them but i found them to be slightly out of tune on the D and G when I moved up past the first position. In an effort to save someone else some money I have made a list below with the strings I tried and a rating out of ten for tone and tension on a guitalele tuned upto AECGDA. In fact, these are premium strings (which means they are at the pricier end of things) but they will preserve your tone for a long time. Perhaps the Yamaha web site was leaving implicit that I should be using 1/2 or 1/4 scale strings when they say "normal" classical strings? There are many strings on the market, but some brands are known for their quality and are worth the investment. I tried today what seems to be the best solution : a set of normal tension savarez (red card, I presume), from E to B tuned to A, D, G, B, E plus a Hannabach silver special high tension C-8 string tuned to low E.

Another entry for D’addario on our list, but these strings are great for any guitalele player and will only set you back a few dollars! Aquila strings are a great option for this (in fact they could be classed as a ukulele string, but will work with a guitalele nonetheless). But since my guitalele has bridge pins and requires ball-end strings I use ball-end classical guitar strings without issue. To optimise the performance of Red Series strings, differing percentages of copper powder are used in each individual string, resulting in varying gradients of light to darker red across the strings. These D'addario strings appealed to me when I opened the packet because they felt like a more substantial version of the 'GHS' strings my ukulele arrived with. It seems as thought the guitalele was really made to sound at this pitch : a rich and full sound, perfectly balanced, without the "ping"-like accent in the treeble that you get with a guitalele tuned in A or even in G. Of course, there is the option cut them off, but it’s an added task to do if you don’t actually need to! You can play guitar songs on a guitalele as the guitalele strings are tuned in the same intervals, however, you need to be aware that the guitalele is tuned the same way as a guitar with a capo on the fifth fret.
