About this deal

Subtitles and audio description information displayed on electronic programme guide programme banner The TV sits on two plastic and metal stands that slot into the bottom of the chassis without any screws, instead, they are held in place with magnets and the weight of the TV on top. If someone comes across a different type of panel or if their Samsung Q70Tdoesn't correspond to our review, let us know and we will update the review. Note that some tests, like gray uniformity, can vary between individual units.

The Samsung Q70 QLED looks functional rather than flashy, and while it retains the same basic styling as the rest of Samsung's 2019 QLED range, it also reflects the lower price point. We uploaded the latest brightness measurements and uniformity photos for the Accelerated Longevity Test. The motion handling is also good for an LCD TV, without resorting to frame interpolation. However, if necessary, the motion settings smooth things out, often proving useful with sporting action where there’s plenty of movement. We measured the input lag at 14ms, which is great news for gamers, especially since there’s no danger of image retention or screen burn. The Q70R has its strengths and weaknesses when compared with its peers, like the Sony XG95, and whether the Q70R suits you will certainly come down to what it is you want from your TV. If you feel like boosting the audio on your Q70 then there are numerous soundbar options available, although the obvious choice would be the similarly monikered Samsung HW-Q70R. This model is styled to match the Q70 and includes a wireless subwoofer and support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.

Percentage luminance drop at 20 degree vertical angle from the centre of the screen with 100% white output The Samsung Q70 produced some lovely HDR images... even if it isn’t as impressive as its more expensive siblings. Samsung has tried to boost the sound quality of its TVs this year through the application of some machine learning. The result is the AI-enhanced Intelligent Sound mode that analyses the audio based on the environment and content, and the optimises it accordingly. As a result the sound has more width and depth, creating an acoustic experience that is more defined and immersive.

The Apple TV app works well and is easy to setup and connect with your existing Apple account, providing access to TV shows and movies, as well as your own library. The picture and sound quality are excellent, and the app supports 4K and HDR10. Apple also supports Dolby Vision and Atmos, but Samsung doesn’t support the former and there’s currently no support for the latter, although that could be added. The mid-range model in Samsung’s 2021 4K QLED line-up, the Q70A is an elegant looking 4K option with a whole raft of features for home cinema, TV and gaming addicts alike. It’s also a considerably less expensive option than any of Samsung’s recently released Neo QLED Mini LED range. Max light output HDR (high dynamic range) while displaying small white square taking up 10% of the screen (measured in Nits) Unfortunately, Samsung still doesn’t support Dolby Vision, a proprietary version of HDR that also uses dynamic metadata. This puts the company’s entire TV range (including the Q70) at a disadvantage to models from Panasonic and Philips, both of which support Dolby Vision and HDR10+. However, overall the Samsung Q70 delivers an excellent all-round performance.

The four HDMI inputs are all 18Gbps full bandwidth 4K 4:4:4 60p compliant with support for HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG High Dynamic Range signals. The Q70R does not support Dolby Vision dynamic metadata HDR.The Q70 also includes Samsung’s clever Ambient mode, which allows you to utilise your TV, even when you’re not watching it. This feature is energy efficient, and displays information such as the news or the weather, or even artwork and family photos. It can also blend in with the surroundings, making the TV virtually invisible when wall mounted. There is no such thing as the perfect TV and each technology and model offers different pros and cons, which may or may not suit what you are looking for. At this level of the market, there are some big differences to the flagship models with some features carried over and others either missing or pared down to the price point. Screen mirroring with Apple and Android devices is possible so you can enjoy your mobile content on the big screen. Unlike the higher end QLED TVs for 2019, the Q70R doesn’t have the one connect box. This is obviously a cost-cutting measure and a shame as we really like the one connect approach with just one cable to the TV for power and sources. We did quite a bit of comparison testing with the Q70R up against the Sony XG95, which is very close on features and price point, as well as some testing against a Philips OLED+903 OLED.

Since Bixby is actually built into the TV, rather than simply working with another device that includes a smart assistant, the experience is largely seamless. Bixby is best accessed by simply pressing the mic button on the remote. There is a near-field mic built into the TV but we’d recommend turning that off, unless you want Bixby springing into life every 10 minutes. Next up – and of particular interest to PS5 and Xbox Series X owners – the Q70A’s panel has a refresh rate of 120Hz and is capable of delivering 120fps on a 4K signal. If that wasn’t enough, it’s imbued with a new feature called ‘Motion Xcelerator Turbo+’ that enhances motion clarity for incredibly smooth, crisp gameplay, plus it supports FreeSync variable refresh rate (VRR) and promises an impressively low input lag, all combining to deliver a premium next-gen gaming experience for a mid-range price. ALLM (Auto Low-Latency Mode) is also on hand to boot the TV into a low-input Game mode when next-gen consoles are connected. The catch? There’s only one HDMI 2.1 input. One thing's for sure: It certainly isn’t as bright, topping out at 800nits in its most accurate picture mode. However the tone mapping makes sure the peak highlights are delivered as accurately as possible. It also covers almost 100% of the DCI-P3 colour space, ensuring that the HDR images make full use of all those extra colours.Subtitle and audio description information spoken on the electronic programme guide more info panel We have now started delivering right to your door!
