EU standards dictate that a grass seed mix should be at least 70% – 80% pure. However, that leaves a huge 20% – 30% of potential contamination from other grass types and or weed seeds. If you want an ornamental lawn that’s more for looking at than actually using, choose an ornamental seed blend.
Question is - which seed to use? I came across Miracle Gro Patch Magic which looks fairly good, any thoughts or recommendations etc? However, after the most recent winter, and when it came to mowing it again, I noticed a few patches in the lawn where the soil had kind of been pushed to the top of the surface (it’s difficult to explain really) - there was plenty of grass and then suddenly just a patch of really firm, hard soil that had somehow made its way to the surface and there is no grass on this patch. Birmingham's future was also uncertain because Perry Barr is going to be used for a new housing village, but the British Speedway Promoters Ltd accepted assurances about their short-term situation. Poorer quality seed mixes only ever meet the minimum standards. Who knows what your new lawn would look like if you chose a product like this!
