About this deal

Because even though he knew he was sick, he preferred not to think about the fact that he was dying until that reality slapped him in the face. Happiness is nonetheless true happiness because it must come to an end, nor do thought and love lose their value because they are not everlasting. Some of his friends didn’t know what to say, other than recounting “motivational” stories of people who had survived the disease. The night of the terrible morning, I was supposed to go on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and then appear at a sold-out event at the 92nd Street Y, on the Upper East Side, in conversation with Salman Rushdie. The exquisite moment when one can break in and cap a story, or turn a line for a laugh, or ridicule an opponent.

Christopher Hitchens's own pieces are shaped like a fugue; the theme is death, his own death, and the voice in each piece changes slightly as death comes closer. And eventually, between the treatments and the degenerative nature of his illness, he lost the ability to speak. Full of conversations with brain surgeons, psychologists, hospice workers and poets, this is a deeply personal book about how we can make peace with dying.Grove Press An imprint of Grove Atlantic, an American independent publisher, who publish in the UK through Atlantic Books. Corvus Atlantic’s commercial fiction list which includes women’s, historical, romance, sci-fi, crime and thriller. A loss to the literary world, and an even bigger loss in the pursuit of fact over fiction, and the end of corruption and greed. I was especially struck by the conviction of a man who was a staunch atheist unflinchingly prepared for a godless death. Commenting on the persistent metaphor of battle that doctors and friends use to describe his life with cancer (most of this book was published in Vanity Fair), Hitchens mightily challenges this image, for “when you sit in a room. One such gesture was the physician's plunging of fingers into the neck to gauge whether a cancer had spread into the lymph nodes, but others were more subtle, including the hushed tones and reverences that came with the business. He dispatches the illusion that "whatever does not kill me makes me stronger" for the nonsense it is. It is, however, sobering and grief-inducing to read this brave and harrowing account of his "year of living dyingly" in the grip of the alien that succeeded where none of his debate opponents had in bringing him down.
