Fifty thousand Vietnamese surrounded the French and there was no escape for them. After 55 days of fierce fighting, in which the French forces were tactically and physically defeated, the French were forced to surrender on May 7, 1954. The military defeat at Dien-Bien-Phu marked the end of the French military presence in Indochina.
