About this deal

I usually don’t like unnecessary killings in novels, but I just wanted Oliver gone and didn’t care how it happened. It's clear from the third GGGTM, Jackson seems to love the idea that teenagers can pull off the perfect murder, but it's just baffling. Red Kenny is on a road trip for spring break with five friends: Her best friend – the older brother – his perfect girlfriend – a secret crush – a classmate – and a killer. Five Survive is the latest book from Holly Jackson and I honestly couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I'm an extreme scaredy-cat when it comes to anything crime or anything that could possibly happen in real life, but I ended up reading this late into the night and I was honestly scared to go to sleep because I have extremely irrational fears. Ebooks fulfilled through Glose cannot be printed, downloaded as PDF, or read in other digital readers (like Kindle or Nook). With it taking place over the course of 8 hours, Jackson has no choice but to move the story through dialogue. She ended up working on the murder case and was able to come up with answers with the help of Ravi Singh.

I went into this with high expectations bc I LOVED the agggtm series by Holly Jackson and I'd seen great things about this- and it didn't disappoint! Eighteen year old Red and her friends are on a road trip in an RV, heading to the beach for Spring Break. Anyway, what am saying is that it's his crap that made other characters interesting and brought more life to the book as a whole. The brand new unmissable crime thriller from Holly Jackson, best-selling, award-winning author of the Good Girl’s Guide to Murder trilogy. If you like the stories Gone Girl, One of Us Is Lying, Serial, or any other number of thrillers, then check out this story for yourself!

To get to the good stuff, though, I think Jackson did an amazing job at building tension between the characters. While Five Survive has a completely different feel than AGGG, it still showcases Jackson's fluid and engaging writing style.

While I enjoyed the novel, though, it didn’t have the same flare as Holly Jackson’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, but I can’t imagine that any novel will be that good ever again. There were a lot of reveals I wasn't expecting and some super unlikable characters, which are always fun for me. If you want a book you can fly through in a single sitting, this is absolutely it, delivering thrills, betrayals and shock revelations in abundance. The writing, as Holly Jackson has already proven numerous times, was amazing in its style, the flow of the story, and the development of the characters. The trips starts off fine, but soon the tires of their RV are shot out in an area with no cell service. But that also means that I had to be with these characters in a confined space for 300 or so pages… and let me tell you, it did get exhausting after a while. When their their RV breaks down, they originally think it is an accident- but then discover they are being targeted by a sniper.

She deserves everything 😭❤️That scene with Red and her mother was so beautifully written and I was just crying and crying while reading that part. This Book Kills is the deadliest YA thriller of 2023, perfect for fans of Holly Jackson and Karen McManus. Holly Jackson started writing stories at a young age, completing her first (poor) attempt at a novel when she was fifteen. There’s definitely a lack of character development in Five Survive compared to the author’s previous trilogy, which could be due to the fact that this is a standalone novel, but I had trouble keeping each person separated as they all sounded exactly the same.Simon more so than Maddy, because I feel he had more personality and he made me laugh multiple times. What ensues is a high stakes novel with secrets, lies, and drama with one of the six not making it out alive. My main issue with the book was what I mentioned above: it just started out way too slow and was dragged out for a hundred pages too long. I've read all four of her books at this point and she always gives me the most complex feelings about the decisions she makes with her books. There are brief but graphic descriptions of people being shot (a gaping hole in their face, a halo of red pooling on the road, "her head undone, leaking out and soaking into the road").
