Because this drink contains several ounces of cranberry juice, it’s also refreshing in the sense that it’s truly hydrating. It’s even got a few vitamins in it.

While store-bought lime juice is great in a pinch, it’s not the wisest to use in drinks where lime is a star player. Bottled concentrate will still taste good, but if you have time to squeeze some limes, don’t skimp. Gently attach your lime wedge to the edge of the glass. When you’re ready to enjoy, squeeze the lime into the drink and get sipping! Do you shake a vodka cranberry?

It’s practical. Make a double batch of my cranberry sauce recipe, and use one for the vodka while storing the other for the Christmas roast. It will keep for weeks. A wedge of lime would be the most common garnish but any citrus really goes – though the bright green color really gives a beautiful contrast to the deep red drink. I have never received that much appreciation for Christmas gifts as I have for this homemade Cranberry Liqueur! Don’t waste the soaked fruit. There are lots of ways to use this. Add it to your cranberry sauce for Christmas Day (strictly for the grown ups!) or use it to top vanilla ice cream. Add it to microwave chocolate fudge or use it in my fruit tea loaf recipe (skip the soaking in tea stage).

Serve it as a punch:The Madras is a drink that is perfect for mixing up ahead of time to be served as a party punch. Simply increase the ingredients and stir them in a pitcher and chill until it is time to serve. Add a few slices of orange, and you have a super easy punch that your guests will love. Do this by putting 200 ml water in a pan with 100 g caster sugar. Heat until the sugar dissolves and then mix in a little at a time. Take care. You can always add but you can’t take away. If you’re planning to make a lot, I totally see the need for a shortcut! See if your grocery store sells pre-squeezed, fresh lime juice. And, of course, a skilled bartender who knows how to mix the ingredients just right can turn a good drink into a great one.
