About this deal

From being starved and beaten to having their eyes gouged out in violent acts of revenge, a new historical novel sheds light on the harsh existence endured by prostitutes in Ancient Rome.

Is it possible for her to love him or even know if she loves him when what she needs from him is so huge and what he can take from her is kind of nothing to him? There is a fresco in the museum at Naples that shows what an ancient harbour along that part of the coastline looked like, something like a mile or so away from Pompeii, which at that point would have been a proper port, much closer to the sea. I used a lot of Ovid's Art of Love, so I knew that text was going to be important in the chapter headings, but I did not always choose exactly which point of those texts I would use, from the Art of Love in particular, until afterwards. There are tons of locations to visit in Starfield, but few are worth bookmarking more than The Den, off the beaten path in the Wolf system, The Den is somewhere you’d never even visit if you mostly stuck to the main story missions.Dido has a really tragic back history in that she was kidnapped - again, completely regular that this happened to people.

Overall, Elodie makes the reader realise just how dangerous and difficult it would have been to be a woman in the ancient world. While Amara's personal story is a work of fiction, the world in which she exists is steeped in vivid historical detail. and writing which has been found in wax tablets, pottery, seals, tomb inscriptions, and probably most interestingly; graffiti. All of life up there on the stage, and actors have the courage to say what one cannot say elsewhere. If you read a decent translation of an ancient text, it is often translated into highly colloquial, contemporary language because to the people at the time, that is what it would have sounded like. Elodie Harper’s description of the most famous volcanic eruption in history, and of the attempts of those caught in it to survive, is brilliantly done. She draws on her experiences of visiting Atkins in jail to considerable effect in this gripping thriller with a social conscience.

Not only did Elodie create a phenomenal story rooted in archaeological evidence, but she also explores so many themes and issues that would have been prevalent in the ancient world at the time this novel was set. He kisses her, long enough for the others to start whistling, then slaps her on the backside as an obvious sign of dismissal. The coarsest language is also specific to characters like Felix the brothel owner - he is a violent, offensive man and his way with words reflects that. No one is all good or bad, and I think that there was a lot of moral greyness about the characters and about the whole story in general, which I thought was important.
