About this deal

The George Foreman Immersa is a clamshell-style electric grill, consisting of an electric control panel with heating indicator lights, a sturdy matte-plastic exterior, a removable drip-tray and two non-stick metal grill plates inside. There’s a whole host of food you can cook on a grill, which is why we test how well they can handle a variety of ingredients. As with other George Foreman grills, the Immersa’s simplicity and straightforwardness can be considered a weakness as well as a strength. Many have removable plates, which means they can either be popped in the dishwasher or washed more easily by hand. The first is that the plates are fixed and, while they’re non-stick, we still spent about 10 minutes cleaning them up once they’d cooled as grease tends to gather around the ridges. This means you can be sautéing mushrooms and eggs on the griddle while sizzling lower fat crispy bacon on the grill. If a grill doubles up as a toasted sandwich maker, we’ll make paninis and note if the filling bursts out the sides or if the sandwich is too flattened. There are lots of good reasons to want to cook barbecue-style in your kitchen, including lack of outdoor space, cold weather and rain. The fatty burgers we cooked left a mess, and even though the plates are non-stick, it took several minutes of wiping to remove the burnt grease from the sides of the ridges. Its “refill” option is handy, meaning you can cook the same food in batches without resetting and there’s even a recipe book to get you started. I tested the individual size Immersa for this review, whose plates measure 24 x 17cm, enough to easily fit two medium chicken breasts or a single large steak. Those who like to fine-tune their cooking won’t have much to work with here, as the Immersa has no tweakable controls or settings and, barring the red and green lights that indicate whether it has finished preheating or not, there are no visible temperature indicators. While the Immersa Individual is perfectly sized for couples and meals for one, those of you looking to cook for larger groups may want to consider the more sizable Immersa Family Grill . Eating healthily can be tricky, especially if it means shunning steaks for carrot sticks, but find the best grill and you’ll be able to make those high-fat meats a little more palatable.

It predicted 28 minutes for thick breasts, which we felt was too long – they were cooked through after 18 minutes. There was a surprising amount of liquid that ran off into the drip tray, hinting that the grill plate was well angled, rather than letting the juices puddle and burn. The non-stick plates cook evenly and the classic sloped design lets all that unhealthy grease and fat run off into the drip tray so you don't have it on your plate! It also doesn’t tip forward like classic George Foreman grills so that fat can run away quickly, and we found it pooled around our meat. In testing, our veggies became a bit singed, but chicken breasts emerged beautifully grilled and juicy. In between cooks, the non-stick coating on the grill plates made them a doddle to wipe down to prepare for the next batch of food. The temperature range is especially flexible, dipping down as low as 100°C for slow cooking, with a high of 240°C for meat. Similarly, if you’ve owned an older grill and are about to upgrade, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the latest features on offer – from smokeless grills that prevent your kitchen filling up with greasy smells, to those that can even be used outside. Fitted with a removable control panel that allows it to be placed straight into the dishwasher or sink after use, it straightforwardly delivers on this promise. We primarily look for whether a grill dries or burns our ingredients in the process of cooking it to perfection and note how long each piece of meat or vegetable takes to cook.

We used it to cook a fairly fatty piece of steak and halved peppers, neither of which caused smoke in the kitchen.During preheat and grilling of beef burgers at 217C; percentage may vary depending on Fit Grill size. It uses the same system of holes in the plate as the Smokeless Grill 28000 we’ve also reviewed, with the difference of a flat design that gives plenty of room for all your barbecued goodies. One frustration is that there’s no cancel button to switch between programmes – you have to remove the food to reset it or flick it off at the socket. Unfortunately, this doesn’t switch the appliance off, so you’ll have to be within earshot of the alert. Both the steak and the chicken breasts came out of the Immersa with nice-looking grill marks and a tasty char on their exteriors, while retaining their juiciness and flavour.

In testing, the grill reached operating temperature in a speedy four minutes, and produced nicely grilled steaks, chicken breasts and mixed vegetables, imprinting tasty char lines on their exteriors, while leaving their interiors moist and flavourful. READ NEXT: Take your grilling outside with the best barbecues for every budget Which features should I look for? Folded flat, it creates a cooking surface of 60 x 48cm – great for feeding a family – but you can also use just the one plate for smaller portions. Moreover, the ease of popping the entire grill in the sink for a quick scrub at the end of proceedings provided a welcome contrast to cleaning crusty pans or more finicky griddles.Designed to funnel away the fat from meat and poultry as it cooks, a grill’s high-heat searing also helps to seal in juices and chargrill the surface, adding flavour. Design: Most models feature a floating hinge; this means that the top plate can adjust to different food thicknesses as opposed to being hinged at a fixed point like a standard sandwich press. Thanks to its game changing design, and removable control panel, the World’s No1* grill is also the World’s No1* washable grill with dishwasher safe plates. As a single temperature machine there’s less versatility than with some models, and you’ll need to keep an eye on some foods as they have a tendency to burn when not closely monitored. However, it cooked chicken and burgers faster than other grills when on the top setting and was easier to clean than most barbecues as the non-stick plate could be washed in the sink.
