About this deal

Volumes 1, 2 and 3 of the books collect artwork from the 3 different sets of murals that were on display at Parco Shibuya from 2017 to 2019. AKIRA: Art of Wall contains reproductions of an art project inspired by AKIRA and carried out with the involvement of the original creator, Katsuhiro Otomo. Digital goods, open DVDs and Blu-rays, smart art prints, mystery bundles, and final sale items are excluded from the return policy.

Housed in a beautifully designed “silver box”, the art book set contains 4 books; three foldout books with reproductions of the all mural art showcased in Shibuya from 2017-2019, one “making of” book, as well as an A2 sized poster. The dimension of the box is about 30 x 18 x 5cm. Vol 4 is the “making of” book, and includes interviews ( in Japanese only ) with Katsuhiro Otomo and Kawamura Kosuke. In this form, Kawamura’s recontextualization of Otomo’s manga is reminiscent of traditional Japanese emaki (picture scrolls), the narrative scrolls that some scholars see as manga’s most ancient ancestors. To commemorate the completion of the newly renovated Parco Shibuya shopping mall, an upcoming exhibition Akira Art Of Wall will be held at 2 galleries located in the building, as well as the release of this special art book. Rounding out the box is a dramatic, 16.5 x 23.4-inch poster. In this form, Kawamura’s recontextualization of Otomo’s manga is reminiscent of traditional Japanese emaki (picture scrolls), the narrative scrolls that some scholars see as manga’s most ancient ancestors. From May 2017 to August 2019, 4 different sets of giant murals featuring the art work from Otomo Katsuhiro’s groundbreaking manga Akira were displayed outside the construction walls of Parco Shibuya as it underwent renovation. 2019 is a year of special significance as it is the year where the events of Akira takes place. A fourth volume includes an exclusive interview with Otomo and Kawamura, as well as photographs of the original exhibition by award-winning photographer TAKAMURADAISUKE.

To commemorate the completion of the newly renovated Parco Shibuya shopping mall, a special exhibition Akira Art Of Wall was held at 2 galleries located in the building, as well as the release of this special art book.Nearly 75 feet (22.7 meters) of illustrations, speech balloons, and text selected from AKIRA’s six volumes stretch across three accordion-bound volumes. This would make for a most excellent gift any day for any manga fan, especially if one enjoys Akira. The price is not cheap, but in my opinion a fair price to pay for a high quality collector’s item. If you’re keen on obtaining a copy, I suggest purchasing one before it goes out of print. My highest recommendations.
