Some cards form the event deck, some are placed in the quest slot, each city on the map gets one card and there’s one card that tells which month it is. These passages of narrative are an absolute joy to read and are a driving factor for me wanting to stop this review right now, and go play it again. You set out to acquire prestige by completing quests using your might, survival, knowledge, communication, perception and thievery skills. After more than a few games, these quests will make their way to a noticeboard, where you can pick them up.
The Kickstarter version of board games often include extra game items to thank and incentivize people to fund/back a Kickstarter project and help it become a completed physical game. But in all other aspects, I greatly prefer Sleeping Gods to Lands of Galzyr, even if it comes at the cost of more rules and having to find people willing to complete a whole campaign. Before the first game, the card trays and adventure boards are set up as noted in the welcoming letter provided inside the box. I bought a copy of Lands of Galzyr both because it looked fun but also with an almost academic interest.

This also extends to the companion app which in addition to working like clockwork features an entire soundtrack which as it turns out is really, really good!This transports you into the world of Galzyr, with hundreds of stories and adventures to be discovered. When performing a particular skill check for a skill that you have you can add in that particular skill die making you more likely to succeed in the check. This design decision makes Lands of Galzyr unpredictable but in a good way, where even failed dice rolls can result in positive outcomes story-wise. In the game, you are an adventurer seeking fame and excitement in Galzyr – a region known for the historic strife between three city-states and their former motherland and the thrill-seeking nature of its colourful inhabitants. Each player gets a small character board that is used to track the amount of gold that player owns as well as the character traits they have. The Game Steward, at its discretion, may offer you the option to have each wave of contents shipped to you as they arrive for an additional fee.These extras include: Stretch Goals - additional items for the board games' backers, and sometimes Kickstarter Exclusives - additional items for the board games' backers that will not go into the standard retail board games. There’s a nice, colourful board, and plenty of cards that contain all the wonderful things and events in that world. While the very first initial setup is a bit cumbersome, the flow of getting the content out of the box and restoring the world where players left of last time is remarkably smooth.
If I’d been playing one character like a sneaky thief, then it makes sense that the character would prefer to use a more sneaky route to get what they want then to simply try to negotiate with an NPC. In many ways, Lands of Galzyr fits the bill perfectly; it is as endearing as it is accessible to newcomers and season board game veterans alike. They will be adventuring across a magical landscape as they attempt to earn prestige through various tasks and noteworthy feats. Once you have entered the specific scene number, the app then unfolds the associated story beats where you in addition to a well-written narrative are presented with skill checks that once performed will advance the scene to the next plot point. To perform a skill check, the player takes the 5 base skill dice, swapping out any of these with an advanced die for any corresponding skills they might have.Players may wish to purchase sleeves for their cards though, as the constant back and forth from the game box can lead to wear and tear. The story master then continues to read, resolving any possible effects like before until the end of the scene is reached. Whether triggered by a quest card in hand or drawn from a separate event deck, each card presents you with a scene that corresponds to the huge library of scenes contained in the companion app. Moving around the board sometimes felt like I didn’t have enough movement actions to get where I was trying to go in one round, thereby forcing me to have an event out in the wilderness of the map. Players pick up quests along the way and then follow the bread crumbs, running from here to there to progress the quest to its next step.
