But the absence of polemicism and grandstanding is likely to have been a good thing for the audience the book was aimed at.When the first edition of the Ladybird Expert book on Climate Change was published in 2017, CO2 levels in the atmosphere were 405 parts per million (ppm), now they are 420 ppm. As a consequence, the impacts of climate change are becoming worse and we saw temperatures reach an incredible 40C in the UK last summer. The illustrations by Ruth Palmer deserve a special mention – they are attractive and very evocative of those of the original Ladybird books. Presenting the story of climate change – the science, the consequences and most importantly our options for responding to it – in a way that doesn’t ruffle the feathers of the notoriously sceptical right-leaning UK press is certainly a major step in the right direction. This is a Ladybird book – it’s not overloaded with words. If you have a long commute into work you could polish it off on one day with no problem at all. It’s a slim volume, nicely illustrated and written with admirable clarity.
