About this deal

Alas, this is not an issue, Sealskinz can be washed (and dried) normally alongside the rest of your gear. What all of those things have combined to mean is that I really like the Merrell Trail Glove 3 shoes I bought a couple months ago, in advance of this trip.

PS testing revealed very low insulation value (see “ Sailing Socks,” PS January 2019) and this round of testing cemented our opinion. Boot length is better in boots, and with low shoes the taller socks can keep water from wicking up your mid-layer. I like winter sailing; not just the shoulder seasons, but also the wash-the-frost-off-the-deck cold of January and February.I wore one pair of Teko Medium Hiking Socks the whole way (rinsing them out a couple of times – not a proper wash) and they were comfortable every day. Trick might be that she doesn't go mad in them trying to test their limits, just to help keep out general water that a normal pair of big man boots would manage. I wear mostly Trail Gloves and a discontinued Vivobarefoot style (I liked them so much I bought two pair). For me, Sealskinz mid-length waterproof socks, worn over a not-too-thick pair of synthetic-material boot socks, were an absolute must for the conditions, even though they are rather expensive and relatively short-lived.

Ankles: I haven't hurt them yet, but rolled sideways a number of times last year on the rough rocks and roots of SHT. I don't like warm feet and the solution was simple - I kept the socks wet on the outside by walking through water every-so-often and my feet stayed nicely cool (I was wearing non-waterproof shoes of course! I also have these (the non leather hightop version) Vivobarefoot hiking shoes, which say they are "hydrophobic," whatever that means, and are super comfortable and minimalist, which may be better for hiking, and are definitely multi season.A 40k rip through every type of surface you could imagine from tarmac, to gravel, to singletrack in the wet, wet forest. Icebreaker, Darn Tough, and Filson have decent wool socks, and I've heard good things about Bridgedale thin socks, though I've yet to try them myself. I see the same is true for a lot of people on here, but I've had quite a few pairs of Sealskinz (and some cheapy Aldi equivalents) and don't think any of them weren't letting water at least a bit within 5 runs, let alone 5 years.
