About this deal

The character of Yotsuba is cited by reviewers as one of the key appeals of Yotsuba&!, especially her energy, enthusiasm, and sense of wonder. For example, one wrote, "Yotsuba’s wide-eyed awe at each discovery, from the idea of a milkman to learning how to catch fish, is both inspiring and infectious. You want to see what happens next, because she continually comes across as genuine without turning into cloying." [15] A reviewer at Anime News Network wrote, "What is really special about Yotsuba, though, is that newness with which she, as a child, sees the world. That the manga allows us to glimpse the world through those same eager eyes is what gives it appeal far beyond its humor." [16] Johanna Draper Carlson, long-time comics reviewer for Publishers Weekly, said that "Yotsuba is a sponge of a character, with infinite possibility as she learns about life. Watching her do so is both fun and funny, and the way she finds enjoyment in everything is inspirational. It creates an infectious feeling of shared joy in the reader." [17] Another claimed that "Yotsuba Koiwai's adventures are ... a lucid and charming look at the world through a child's eyes, as she gets into scrapes that remind us all of our own childhoods (if only through manga-tinted glasses)." [18]

Cheerful Child: Yotsuba is a curious little fireball — at least for the first few volumes. As the series progresses and her characterization gets more nuanced, she becomes not universally cheerful: so far, she's been shown having two meltdown tantrums, a day of total dejection, as well as a fit of sulks that Koiwai and Yanda had to cajole her out of. Not so much averted as made part of a three-dimensional character, and her tantrums aside she is indeed one of the most optimistic children ever. If you're not familiar with the genre, slice-of-life usually revolves around the daily occurrences in the characters' lives. There's no grand quest here, just regular activities that any reader can relate to, like running errands or special events like festivals. That said, the series is far from boring — Yotsuba always manages to make some mischief for herself. The world as seen through Yotsuba's eyes is a shining and exciting place. Most of the enjoyment and humor comes from her unique perspective, and seeing the other characters responding to her joy. What Makes Yotsuba&! So Easy to Read? Slice of Life: Each chapter is an episode in Yotsuba's literal daily life — as in taking place on sequentia No Longer with Us: Asagi talks about her salaryman father like this, though he's most definitely not dead. The first time she does it, Fuuka calls her on it, saying "No, no, no. Dad is alive. He's working right now."

Fuuka, the middle Ayase sister, is the second one to encounter Yotsuba when she has just moved in after Ena. As a responsible 16-year-old high schooler, Fuuka often takes on the role of a mother or older sister to Yotsuba by watching over her whenever she is playing or joining in. While Yotsuba seems to like Fuuka and even once claims she loves her when Fuuka says they are going to make a cake, Yotsuba finds her less attractive compared to her older sister Asagi. Azuma, Kiyohiko (2005). "Chapter 17: Yotsuba & Flowers". Yotsuba&!. Volume 3. ADV Manga. ISBN 978-1-4139-0329-4. Yotsuba is drawn as a small girl with green hair done in four pigtails, giving her somewhat the appearance of her namesake, a four-leaf clover ( 四葉のクローバー Yotsuba no kurōbā). She also has matching green eyes, and is considered by most people to be very cute. Her standard outfit consists of a white T-shirt with light red or blue sleeves (in the fall she wears the same shirt but with long sleeves), matching red and white shoes, and a pair of beige shorts. Yotsuba has a carefree and energetic personality, taking delight in simple matters even as she learns about all manner of things in her daily life. In Japanese, Yotsuba's dialogue is written without kanji, making it seem simpler and more child-like, and in a typeface that gives the impression of speaking with high intensity. Her energy is noted by other characters, especially members of the neighboring Ayase family. However, when deeply frightened or upset, she does cry, and she has an unexplained fear of anything resembling a bullseye.

Mentioned by Asagi in chapters 3 and 62, Fuka in chapter 13, and Mrs. Ayase in chapter 14; in Azuma, Kiyohiko (2005). Yotsuba&!. Volume 1. ADV Manga. ISBN 978-1-4139-0317-1. and Azuma, Kiyohiko (2005). Yotsuba&!. Volume 2. ADV Manga. ISBN 978-1-4139-0318-8. Cerebus Syndrome: Downplayed. Starting in volume 15, a gradual arc has been building up to Yotsuba becoming old enough to enter kindergarten — something which causes Koiwai to reflect on the time he has left with her, as well as realize just how much she's matured. While the series is still just as lighthearted and breezy as always, there's a tinge of melancholy to these later chapters that wasn't present before. Asagi, an outgoing woman who enjoys playing pranks and spending time with children, is friends with Torako, a woman of few words who's introspective and not good with kids.Face Doodling: Yotsuba on her dad, so he can match the drawing she made of him with a beard and moustache. At just 21 years old, Yotsuba Kominato has already made a name for herself in the fashion industry. She has appeared in numerous magazines, walked the runway for various fashion shows, and collaborated with major brands. Her signature style, which includes feminine dresses, elegant heels, and cute accessories, has inspired countless fans to emulate her look. Yotsuba has never attended school, and as of the first chapter does not know what a grade is. In chapter 35, she fails to understand repeated explanations of homework. At one point, Yotsuba muses to herself, "People look cool on bicycles... even Fuuka." Thankfully, Fuuka didn't hear this. Mondegreen Gag: Whenever Yotsuba sings, she always mishears the lyrics and comes up with strange alternatives. The humor usually doesn't translate out of Japanese well.
