About this deal

A reflecting telescope collects the light from celestial objects via a combination of specially curved mirrors and guides it into an eyepiece, where it is then further magnified. The 4mm eyepiece has 75x optical magnification to provide a detailed look at the Moon and other planets such as the rings on Saturn. Unfortunately, it’s the lack of accessories (such as the lunar filter, decent eyepieces and finderscope) that let the FirstScope down and could result in the young astronomer becoming frustrated and losing interest. I hope the grandson is equally impressed come Christmas, and that he has clear skies during the remainder of the school hols!

Useable straight out of the box, all you need to do is insert an eyepiece and you’re ready to start viewing. From this, we can adjust the position of the test optic and the reference sphere to obtain a perfectly calibrated system. A clear December sky offered a gaggle of solar system targets including Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the moon to test the telescope's optical system. With practice, you’ll be able to find your target, but (arguably) you shouldn’t have to work that hard in the first place. It’ll provide magnifications of 30x and 200x if used with the FirstScope and the eyepieces supplied with it.Although the field of view and image was much better than the supplied 3mm, the FirstScope doesn’t do a great job of handling eyepieces with a short focal length.

ND filters can also be used reduce the glare from Venus to better see its crescent phases, and to help dim bright daytime views when using a telescope terrestrially. Be ready for the next big comet with Celestron’s special-edition Cometron FirstScope, a compact, lightweight telescope that’s perfect for beginners looking to experience the magic of a dazzling comet, planet, or nebula. As noted before, the Moon showed visible chromatic aberration (color around the edges) with the supplied 20mm (15x) eyepiece. A number of these are designed for both beginners and younger astronomers – and chief among these is the Celestron FirstScope.

This tabletop Dobsonian-style telescope includes a spherical mirror with a generous 76 mm of aperture. A moon filter reduces the brightness of the moon and improves contrast so that greater detail can be observed on the lunar surface.

If you’ve owned a telescope before you might be expecting a bit more, but unfortunately that’s not the case.Using Celestron telescopes from his home in Texas, Robert captures more detailed images than professional astronomers could during the heyday of the Apollo missions. So now we have the problem / hassle of either sending it all back, or doing without the CD and trying to fix new holes in the bottom of the telescope. This full featured planetarium software is capable of printing star charts, displaying beautiful astronomical photos, helps you to identify planets and stars, learn the constellations, and much more. It’s compact and lightweight enough for an adult to pick up and move with just one hand, but while it’s designed to be accessible to younger children, it’s best if moving the scope is left to the adults.

Celestron’s FREE planetarium app is an astronomy suite that redefines how you experience the night sky.Generally, the higher the Strehl ratio, the lower the Astigmatism and Coma meaning a better image quality from your instrument.
