About this deal

Paul is not the most sociable person; he likes his own company as being an author makes it easier for him to keep out of harm's way. Sul gioco delle parole e l'utilizzo di termini desueti o ridondanti, a tratti usati con compiacimento dall'autore, che la narrazione perde un po' di spinta.

I don't usually quote from the books I'm reviewing but in this case it's necessary, "Charles loved big words, loved forcing them into his sentences no matter how much they squealed. The conclusion was extremely poignant and ensured I ended my voyage within these pages on a positive note. The book ends with a poignant footnote/essay where the author shares that around the same time that the book came out he was diagnosed with a terminal and swift-acting cancer of the brain. The sleepers as they are known, Paul the central character is a sleeper, one who can still sleep and sadly sees the world decend into violence and collapse.

I never normally just pick up books I see, as I have so many unread books already on my shelves, and I also get a heap of recommendations that I try and pursue. He makes an offhand reference to Star Wars (which literally couldn't be more wrong and is surprisingly insulting to Leia, the only prominent woman in the original trilogy). A few people, perhaps one in ten thousand can still sleep, and they've all shared the same strange, golden dream.

It was stupid, the story went absolutely NOWHERE, so I was left feeling not only annoyed and offended, but like the entire thing was a waste of time and the paper it was printed on. Fuck not swearing profusely; these words are a part of the english language for a reason, and at times like this they're damned fucking useful. Paul is an etymologist – his life revolves around the exploration of words and their origins, and writing books about their history and transformation. Bir sabah insanlar evlerinden ayrılıp güne başladıklarında fark ediyorlar ki; o gece dünya üzerinde hiçbir insan (en azından biri hariç) uyuyamamış.

Reality is distorted as the conceptual fiction of the world of Nod turns fact in the eyes of the Awakened. It's short and bitter-sweet as it concentrates on the unhappiness of others in an apocalyptic landscape where it's as though there is a huge clock around ticking down to the death of everyone on the planet. After psychosis sets in for those who cannot sleep, and Nod falls into the wrong hands, Paul’s world begins to spiral out of control in a way he never could have imagined.

I felt as though this was a book of two parts and I’d have preferred the first to continue in a more “normal” manner. Having suffered from insomnia for much of my adult life, it did not seem to me that the actions and behaviour of the sleepless characters in the story really rang true. If your mind and body never again got its eight—or even four or three or any—hours of necessary rejuvenation. I teach English and Creative Writing at Selkirk College and own and operate a chain of online newspapers.
