About this deal

I just felt that for such a young girl, who experienced such terrible things, she bounced back awfully quickly, which I found a bit unrealistic.

There, a tragic accident brings her face to face with Etienne - a man from her past she's never quite forgotten. The author styled it into more of a murder mystery that kept me on the edge of my chair as we follow the life of Belle who is not yet 20 years old making unwise decisions in her young life.

With her father in the Royal Marines, Lesley and her older brother spent three years in grim orphanages before her father remarried - a veritable dragon of an ex army nurse - and Lesley and her older brother were brought home again, to be joined by two other children who were later adopted by her father and stepmother, and a continuing stream of foster children. Right from the very beginning you are introduced to the main character Belle, who is a 15-year-old girl full of innocence despite living in the ground floors of her Mothers Brothel.

Another thing I found annoying was that every time Lisette is mentioned, Pearse has to work in the fact that the lives of Lisette and her son will be in danger. This carefully crafted false facade crumbles when Belle witnesses the murder of Millie, one of the girls from upstairs. Belle begins the novel a a somewhat innocent young girl of fifteen, shielded from the murkiness of the world she lives in by her Mother and her housekeeper Mog.

The story is interesting and it is especially heartrending at places when Belle endures such horrible circumstances.E nenhum parece estar ali por acaso, todos têm um papel preponderante na vida de Belle, ainda que alguns durante aquele espaço de tempo não tenham estado directamente ligados a ela. Her friend Jimmy and Mog and even Annie is scared of what will happen to Belle but seems helpless when faced with the prospect of rescuing her from the clutches of the Falcon.

The impact of constant change and uncertainty in Lesley's early years is reflected in one of the recurring themes in her books: what happens to those who are emotionally damaged as children. Heartbreaking, enduring and masterfully told, The Promise will take you on a breathtaking journey into the battlefields of the First World War.
