About this deal

Importantly, the on/off function can be locked by simply holding both buttons down for a few seconds; there's little worse than reaching into your pack to find your torch has been knocked on accidentally and is nearly out of charge, so I do question the wisdom of any design without a lock. A torch worth having on the hill should be at least splash proof, but the fully waterproof Storm 500-R goes a lot further. The larger right hand button turns it on and off, and can be held down for dimming or brightening the light. Another advantage of the quick tap is that you can use it to help save battery life, by having the torch set at a lower output and then only tapping to full-distance for brief periods when you really need to pick out your route far ahead. The SPOT 400-R is a deceptively compact, lightweight and comfortable headtorch that’s good looks belie its power, functionality and durability.

The Black Diamond Spot 400 is a small and compact headlamp that still manages to pack a large amount of light for its size. The charger port cover looks a little bit on the flimsy side, so I’m not sure how rigorously I would want to test that claim! Your mid-power 200 lumen option - still brighter, let's not forget, than a lot of older torches on full - gives you a more forgiving 8hr burn time (30mins reserve), while the very lowest output will go on for a full 225hr (0 reserve). Living in the Lake District means my gear often has to deal with inclement weather when I’m out and about, and the SPOT 400-R was subject to some typical Cumbrian conditions on more than one occasion. When you need the best, brightest, most waterproof, feature rich headlamp that is also ready for any adventure no matter the conditions, reach for the Storm 450 Headlamp.

I'm not sold on the ability to dim the beam since I'm often unsure what level of output I've set it to and have to keep going back to check: for me, three discrete modes (low, mid and high) would be plenty, and clearer than an undifferentiated scale. Lumen): 200 h Protection against water: IP67 Weight: 160 g Misc: PowerTap technology; Light functions: High, Low, Reserve; Night vision mode (red, green, blue); Memory mode; lock mode Item No. The Storm 400 also has three different colored night vision modes and peripheral white lighting for close-range activities like carefully re-racking for the final summit pitch in the dark. The inbuilt battery on the Storm 500-R charges via a micro USB, taking 3 hours for a full charge from empty (and with clear and useful charge level indicator lights). So far I’ve used this unit for everything from camping to a bit of basic cave exploration, and also on night time runs where it’s great for illuminating everything when I get tired and start stumbling everywhere like a drunk after banging out 20 miles. The torch will remember the dimmed output you previously had it set to, and I don't know if this reduces or adds to my faff factor. com/Imagestorage/imagesSynchro/0/0/8d2020f76777943d18c71aaebc8fb5f3f53a1feb_H21BDIAACC170554_BDIA0430433_0. All three can be turned up brighter than almost anyone would ever need and you can only have one color on at any one time. With just two buttons—one for on/off and dimming, the other for switching between modes—it’s user-friendly. This hugely practical headlamp is completely water and dust proof (rated to IPX67) allowing use in the most hostile and extreme environments.

The Black Diamond Storm 400's PowerTap Technology enables you to quickly and easily access maximum brightness with the touch of a finger. With its smaller housing and lower capacity battery I suspect the Spot will if anything fare a bit less well in the cold than the Storm, but after a couple of hours in the home freezer it still seemed fine. With a compact body, the Spot 400- R features a low profile ergonomic and balanced design for added comfort making it a go-to pick for any pursuit- from midweek dawn patrols to late night cragging sessions, push the daylight. It's supposed to be waterproof and being an avid kayaker both of mine have been tested and I'm happy to report no problems in that regard. With a new, compact body, the Black Diamond Storm 400 is more ergonomic, and the updated user interface includes a secondary switch for easy mode selection.

These buttons are more or less operable with cold hands or wearing gloves, but it helps a lot of you're already well familiar with using the torch since you can't feel much. An example could be using the collected information to analyze and determine what information is most popular on the site, to be aware of what should be easy to find on the site. Finally the other great thing about this is despite the high output the head torch has an impressive burn time of 5 hours at 400lm and 150 hours at low, with an 100m distance at full power. For Scottish winter mountaineering it'd more than do in main torch mode (though I'd prefer the Storm as my primary light), but it's also nice and compact if you're carrying it as your backup. But this rugged model has a lot more potential than that, with a balance of brightness and burn time that'd make it equally. The PowerTap feature allows the user to make beam adjustments with a pretty casual bump of the fingertip to the right side of the light housing. For a technical user who expects all-around performance and features out of their headlamp, but still values a small size and compact package. Thanks to its adjustment system, it offers three night vision modes in different colors, as well as a short-door white light. The Storm Headlamp from Black Diamond offers a versatile torch with 8 different lighting modes to suit any situation.
