About this deal

During the reign of Louis XV, an isolated district of south-central France was haunted by the “Beast of Gévaudan” which savagely killed over 100 people, primarily women and children. Some of this might be attributed to the fact that the version I watched on this disc was the extended ‘director’s cut’. As panic sweeps across the region, the King sends his finest military minds, the scientist and adventurer Gregoire de Fronsac and his martial-arts-trained Iroquois blood brother Mani to flush out the Beast and kill it.

A big favourite has also always been the Deleted Scenes - also included here on the bonus discs - as they have a considerably longer opening fight sequence (wisely removed as it betrays the twist behind the lead character's hidden skills), as well as some nice beats across the duration. The early CGI, however clunky, represents a point in history where there was still an uneasiness of how to use those tools. Loosely based on a strew of mysterious murders that occurred in 18 th Century France, this ostensible period drama is infused with some truly magical ingredients which make it at once suspenseful horror, and then all-out action-thriller; smoothly gliding between romantic interplay and highly charged sexuality; founded on a strong backbone of political and religious intrigue, and significantly energised by some truly outstanding martial arts sequences, which perfectly blend in with the rest of it, in spite of the overt anachronism.

Thankfully it does so in the best way, speaking to a wide range of contributors who give a genuinely interesting full account of the film’s inception, production and post-production. French director Christophe Gans unleashed his first full feature, Crying Freeman, back in 1995, based on the popular manga of the same name. tracks available, I only tested them a little and they’re alright but the Atmos is where it’s at for maximum impact. The film looks undeniably gorgeous, with the mostly on-location settings lit and lensed beautifully, with a great sense of atmosphere. In various markets around the world, the Director's Cut of the film is often referred to as the International Cut. I was riding that wave too, back then, hoovering up any kung-fu-heavy films I could find, newly discovering a great love of the martial arts genre. Needless to say, Silent Hilldidn’t drum up much good will for the Gallic film-critic-turned-filmmaker.

Colours are rich, details are pin sharp, yet it still has that sumptuous, natural shot-on-film look. Once again, Gans discusses his influences, including that of Chang Cheh’s The New One-Armed Swordsman and Michael Mann’s Last of the Mohicans. Read more about the condition New: An item that is still in its original shrink wrap from the manufacturer and the original manufacturer’s seal (if applicable) has not been removed. There's some surround enveloping going on here, drawing you into the atmospheric piece, allowing caves to echo, or minute nuances in the silence to creep out at you.The shift in color values even affects the dynamic range of some visuals, like the one seen here, where posterization begins to emerge as well. The Guts of the Beast (2002) - a long and very interesting archival documentary, directed by Pascal Laugier ( Martyrs), which focuses on the various obstacles the creative team behind Brotherhood of the Wolf had to overcome. Currently, I have in my library only this very old French Blu-ray release that StudioCanal produced in 2008. Anything would be better than what we had, and what we get with this 2160p Dolby Vision/HDR10 transfer is pretty damn glorious.
