About this deal

All delivered with a dry, sardonic wit: “Without fire we are at the mercy of the sun to do our cooking unless we happen to be camped on a lava field…. The book I read was Bushcraft 101: A Field Guide to the Art of Wilderness Survival written by Dave Canterbury.

Statt dem Leser zu erklären, wie man ein spezielles Feuer für "Grubenschmieden" baut, würde ich lieber mehr als einen Stichpunkt zum Thema sicherer und verantwortungsbewusster Umgang mit Feuer sehen. It is easily understandable and has plenty of drawings to clarify how things need to look, from fire pits to notches and knots. Zum Umgang mit dem Messer gibt es eine tolle Zeichnung, wie man ein Messer in der Faust halten soll. I have been following Dave’s work for some time as his personal philosophy of relying on minimal, but durable and high-quality gear is something I strive to achieve.Would probably need to read again and, as the author recommended, apply in real-life scenarios to truly get the most out of it. This book comes from many other books written by Dave Canterbury about survival in the outdoors, this is probably the best one for beginners in bushcraft. Yes, there are run-on sentences, but it's the points the author is making that's relevant to me, not his poetic prose and grammar.

Initially, the information provided on frontiersman techniques are impractical to the point of vestigial for the average hiker. In einem großzügigen Kapitel wird das Jagen mit diversen Fallen und das Verarbeiten von erlegten Tieren beschrieben. Based on the 5Cs of Survivability--cutting tools, covering, combustion devices, containers, and cordages--this valuable guide offers only the most important survival skills to help you craft resources from your surroundings and truly experience the beauty and thrill of the wilderness. The whole book is packed full of tips and tricks that are clearly born out of a lot of real-world experience. If you are wanting to start out learning basic bushcraft and wilderness survival skills you will get a good taste in this book.

The reason I really like it is because it is full of things that we can try out during out camping trip next month. While others will pack in a wide variety of modern camping equipment such as nylon tarps and hammocks, synthetic sleeping bags and lightweight pots and use bushcraft skills to make their stay more interesting or comfortable. In the interest of complete honesty, this is so opposite of my normal interest I still can't believe I read it. I'm no expert survivalist, nor am I a novice, but the author's observations, insights, and bushcrafting methods in this book have taught me a great deal about things I hadn't realized and thought of before. This book is a great starting point for beginners in bushcraft like me because it goes over the basic knowledge you need to have for bushcraft.

It covers all the basics from making shelter and starting a fire to catching game and finding medicinal plants. As a camper, I especially liked the author's 4 w's of setting up camp: "Wood", "Water", "Wind", and "Widow-makers". Canterbury's this "one doze medicine" reflected on what I have been collecting as knowledge over the past few years. Written by survivalist expert Dave Canterbury, Bushcraft 101 gets you ready for your next backcountry trip with advice on making the most of your time outdoors. I would highly recommend this book for those that are getting started in traditional bushcraft skills or looking to simplify their kit for short adventures and stays in the woods.Summary of my view on book's parts: 1) Chapter 1 to 10, Appendix A: In its own way, a "Good sum up". Im Großen und Ganzen ist der Inhalt nicht schlecht, ist für mich als langjährigen Pfadfinder sehr oberflächlich. Purchase, test, and familiarize yourself with the best equipment you can afford before venturing out into "The Sticks".
