Please know that this book has TW/CW like bullying, bloodplay, childhood trauma, and death of loved ones off-page. i’m not gonna do a summary bc this book was boring as shit and i don’t wanna bother remembering it but the plot was mediocre along w the characters there’s like no growth within the main girl i feel and the main guys changed ig but i didn’t care about it enough like the ending was a cliffhanger bc main girl got kidnapped but i’m not reading the next book there’s sm other better books out there.

Some of the things they did to Cyn were downright awful but there were also so many sweet moments too mixed in. I myself had a lot of trouble with that at the beginning because I was more interested in the present, and didn't find the chapters in the past interesting. Each story exists within this shared world but is standalone, although characters occasionally cross over. When they tied her up and let her be stripped naked and marked by her peers, that’s a bridge too far in my book.

I am loving these story's from this author i have been waiting patiently to read about the Deana-Dhe after meeting them in The Masks books, it was so worth the wait as i devoured this first book and after that ending i need the next book like STAT! Cyn is a true healer but not only for the physical but for the entire human being and I think through her healing others she heals herself. The way the story flicks between the present and past is materful and seamless, flowing perfectly as not to stutter the plot. Arden ,Lorcan and Carrick form the Deana-Dhe they trade in debts and secrets and lies and Cyn goes to them to find out who killed her mother and now they’ve cashed her debt to them in.

also these characters are so incompatible i don’t understand what the author was trying to do to make them all a couple like she needs to take notes from the bonds series bc while it was slow it had a great plot that made up for it and the slowburn really added to the story. I've read Bea's books and this series that can be read as stand a alone duet but I recommend reading , at least The Duet " The Dancer and the Masks before this one. Moreover, Deana-dhe were supposed to be 'scariest', and I was definitely disappointed in that regards. Pain and abandonment really unite them- their need to control and destroy, Cyn’s need to heal and her muteness are all manifestations of similar adversity. I usually go for the Lorcan character and not saying I didnt like him, but he actually wasn't my favorite, Arden was.some reason the main girl is into the bullying like it’s her kink or whatever so while they torment her they also be making out and shit i’m just so confused. I was a little confused by the timeline of this initially, due to the events at the end of Masks and the Dancer and something that happened to Cyn, which appeared not to have happened at the start of this one!
