About this deal

Not exactly the "cute" I was hoping for when I started out but may end up being more therapeutic and enriching just the same. The thesis of the book is: 1- anxiety is trapped 'in the body', 2- stop thinking, focus on your body and breath.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I don’t browse self-help genre anymore and something written on psychology is a no go area for me as I have found that most of it is toxic psychology which cajoles readers into believing that being self-centred, self-absorbed, self-loving and walling themselves within a fortress of boundaries are the ways to live a fulfilling life. Creating that awareness, using strategies effective for both allows the mind and body to reconnect and resolve the mind-body disconnect that fuels and sustains anxiety. Dr Kennedy suffered with anxiety growing up with a schizophrenic father and my dad was bipolar, so I could relate immediately to a parent who was compromised.I would recommend listening to this book if you are experiencing feelings of anxiety because it does work if you work it. I will reread many sections so I can truly grasp the depth of his uncover truth to anxiety and worry that no other book has done for me. The self-awareness and aliveness it evokes is sheer magic, the way you connect back to yourself, namely the younger self, the younger wounded self, that still lives in your energy field as residual energy, just waiting to be processed and addressed, waiting for the attention and needs that weren't met in the past by our caregivers, to be met now, by the more wiser part of you.

This is good advice, though difficult to consistently do for folks like me who often have trouble settling into our bodies. Kennedy’s personal anecdotes about his psychotic father and meditative/drug-related experiences are interesting at first, by the 100th chapter (yes, there are that many chapters) I felt like I was seeing things over and over again. hours with me as I guide you on a conscious and unconscious exploration of the roots of your anxiety. and a father who was raised by a schizophrenic father, who was often taken ‘away’, my dad bring the eldest bore the weight of man as a boy. As a father himself he had violent rages often that seemed to come from nowhere to me as a child, removing internal doors off hinges and throwing them out into the yard, just because maybe it wasn’t closed when it should be or someone had hung a coat over it?

To solve it, learn to recognize when it’s happening, accept those thoughts are irrational, practice grounding techniques (google it), breath work and yoga. Your mind is an expert level thinker, and you, especially when you are in ALARM, are a mere 𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘶𝘳.

Also like a lot of readers, I am familiar with other books, teachings and modalities in the emotional suffering and healing world: The Power of Now, Radical Acceptance, yoga, Buddhism, Byron Katie, Gabor Mate, mindfulness meditation, psychedelic psychotherapy and so forth. But we don't have to do LSD, because we can just take his word for it that what was revealed to him is applicable to us. Kennedy I would have still been stuck into this ending non escaping circle which was restricting my life experiences. The ego—which is not the proverbial enemy contrary to what we have been told—tries to protect us from every sort of harm and thus keeps us at a safe distance from every stimulus that can trigger our anxiety. I don't know, I just don't think that that entire part of the book was at all necessary; I think his insights would have stood up without going on and on about LSD.I have degrees and advanced training in medicine, neuroscience, and developmental psychology, but much of what I'll share came out of my experiences in very unscientific places. All I can say is I am now more aware when my negative thoughts appear, but focusing on my breath and being more compassionate with myself is making a difference to my victim mentality.
