About this deal

Tom has become reclusive after losing his wife and child to scarlet fever many years before, while Willie is a quiet young boy who comes from an abusive home and is apprehensive of Tom.

You would not have seen an aerial of that type on a roof until the mid 1960's when BBC2 came into being. Despite initial difficulties combined with his reluctance to care for Willie, Tom later takes pity on Willie after learning about his abusive upbringing by discovering the leather belt his mother used to beat him, which he throws into the garden, and does his best to create a suitable home for Willie, such as providing him with new clothes and helping to educate him. The enduring bond and friendship that the two characters share will change both of their lives forever. Beech seems better after suffering a mental breakdown, but when Willie presents her with gifts that the locals from Little Weirwold had given him, and tells her about some of his friends, she accuses him of stealing and is angry he had been interacting with girls and Jews. When the Second World War is declared, Tom finds that his quiet life in the village of Little Weirwold is set to change when nine-year old Willie Beech (Nick Robinson) is evacuated from London and billeted on him.Willie is a quiet, sad child with a deprived and disturbing past, but he slowly begins to flourish under the care of 'Mister Tom' and enjoys an idyllic village life. Willie is a quiet, sad child with a deprived and disturbing past, but he slowly begins to flourish under the care of `Mister Tom` and enjoys an idyllic village life. Beech claims she is a "present from Jesus", but Willie is too young and naïve to consider any other scenario. Based on Michelle Magorian's novel about a cantankerous WWI veteran who is paired, against his will, with a London orphan.

Willie, an illiterate, bed wetting child who has endured a horrific childhood soon brings out the caring parent in Tom that had disappeared years ago, beginning a relationship that will change both their lives. While speaking with Zach, Willie learns about the concept of sex, something his mother raised him to believe was "something dirty" and unacceptable, and realises that his mother herself had been having a relationship with another man, which resulted in the birth of Trudy. Mr Tom's home is Sleepy Cottage and adjoins the Dibley vicarage, which is partially hidden by a wooden shed. The filming will bring back a few memories for people who remember wartime Britain and certainly those who were evacuated out of London to escape the German bombings. When the Second World War is declared, Tom finds that his quiet life in the village of Little Weirwold is set to change when nine-year-old Willie Beech (Nick Robinson) is evacuated from London and billeted on him. John Thaw (Inspector Morse, Kavanagh QC) stars as the widowed and cantankerous Tom Oakley in this charming film adaptation of the prize-winning children`s novel by Michelle Mogorian. The locomotive used was GWR Mogul 7325, 'weathered' in an attempt to camouflage the post-War BR British Rail or British Railways livery. Tom soon realizes that his little boarder comes from a horribly abusive home, and determines to provide him a better one.
