Presenting the 100-minute international cut—and not, as many hoped, John Woo’s proper 116-minute director’s cut, material for which exists in too poor a condition for official release—this transfer does reveal a bit of wear and dirt here and there. The role of Chance gave the Belgian actor the rare opportunity to justify his French vocal inflections, yet hilariously this is maybe the most baffling, dissonant character that Van Damme has ever played on screen: Sporting a stringy, oily mullet and an unwashed, all-denim outfit, Chance looks like the dark twin of Patrick Swayze’s bouncer from Road House, and at all times he’s the weirdest thing in the frame. Hard Target was shot on 35mm film and has been gifted a new native 4K restoration pulled direct from the original camera negative.Therefore, they do not accurately reflect the quality of the 4K content on the 4K Blu-ray disc, including the actual color values of this content. In one of the film’s most memorable scenes, a wounded target manages to slip free from his pursuers and get back to crowded streets, where he’s promptly ignored, if not outright scorned, by those he begs for help. Starring Jean Claude Van Damme at the height of his popularity, the movie is presented on this UHD/Blu-ray combo pack from Kino Lorber in its one-hundred minute unrated ‘International Cut' with a host of new extra features. Thankfully for her, a homeless martial artist and former Marine named Chance Boudreaux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) shows up just in time to save her. and his love of a fart machine that was on set, working with Henriksen and Vosloo and, of course, what JCVD was like to work with.

While it would have been great not to go through the disc replacement process, KLSC's new disc that should be arriving in mailboxes and in new purchases is a welcome upgrade. It certainly lent itself well to the auteur's distinctive balletic action style and, at the same time, probably made Van Damme look the coolest he'd ever looked (and, likely, ever will). These fluctuations become even more pronounced in 1080p, and many of them actually begin to look oddly similar to their counterparts from the old Blu-ray release.These are really only small nitpicks that don’t overly distract or tear you out of the enjoyment of the film. Looking at it as the star’s project above all else, Hard Target may actually be one of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s best films, even if it’s pretty low on the scale for John Woo. Very nice looking set, there's no blu ray disc of Hard Target, just the 4k disc, but you do get a blu ray copy of Hard Target 2, that was a nice surprise.
