About this deal

I’d say well over half of this book goes into almost excruciating detail about the authors mental health and trails of irrational thoughts, to the point where it reads more as a mental health book than anything to do with running. Sometimes the most trivial things force you out of bed, not the most meaningful and important things in your life. As someone who's been exercising for mental health the past few years I totally get it; however, for me there are too many facts and figures and not enough feels.

I'm generally not that much of an nonfiction reader so I guess me not being the biggest fan of this memoir isn't all that surprising. Her divorce being the catalyst for her using exercise, namely running, as the crutch to get her life back on track. The _ga cookie, installed by Google Analytics, calculates visitor, session and campaign data and also keeps track of site usage for the site's analytics report. But through her inspiring personal story and realistic approach she's already inspired thousands of men and women to manage their mental health through exercise. When I was writing my book, Jog On, I read a lot about dualism: the idea that the mind and body are connected. If you suffer from anxiety and are looking for something in your day to day life that will help change your mindset, then I’d strongly recommend this book.

Through her story she gives the reader tips with a non bullshit approach, without sounding smug or preachy. Apart from that, have I learned more about anxiety and other mental illnesses and what physical exercise does to help that. Some of the data that are collected include the number of visitors, their source, and the pages they visit anonymously. Mackie's experiences with running and mental health are similar to my own, thus making this a particularly interesting read. As someone who often feels I should run more, this helped me realise that I can run more when I want to, but should also use running in a way that benefits me, and not as a way of bargaining with myself or forcing myself on bad days.

I imagine lots of people find this cathartic however for me I just found it draining, negative and extremely repetitive. The side notes of other peoples' stories, and stats and general development of science of mind and body needing to be in sync was really good but yes, I didn't really enjoy it. She began to set herself achievable goals - to run 5k in under 30 minutes, to walk to work every day for a week, to attempt 10 push-ups in a row. When the dog’s going crazy, the kids are yelling and the husband’s got his music blasting, I just put my trainers on, plug my headphones in and I’m gone! Divorced and suffered from mental health problems, her motivation to get up from the floor was having to pee. I also love how the author promotes the opposite of the trendy health/ wellness lifestyle which has made so many feel excluded and unmotivated from running or exercising. Following years of suffering with anxiety, but not knowing and trying to ignore it, came to a head when Mackie's husband of a year left her.I wouldn't have imagined that it would end up bringing me joy and confidence and imbue me with a love of exercise, but here we are. I found the honesty about mental health really refreshing and learned a lot about other forms of anxiety. A heartfelt and joyous ode to the strange, wonderful pull of a pair of ugly trainers, tight fitting Polyester, the rainy, windy open road and the peace and clarity it brings.

Mackie knows what she’s talking about from a non-medical point of view and openly admits everyone is different so I’m going to find out more for my own mental health. I also feel that there were bits glossed out on - about food, about her strength training, all alluded to in a few sentences and then moved on. Quite a relatable read which will hopefully motivate me to create a healthy relationship with running. She began to set herself achievable goals – to run 5k in under 30 minutes, to walk to work every day for a week, to attempt 10 push-ups in a row.
