I’d disclosed in some detail what my preoccupations were when writing the book, and the demographic I hoped to reach.It struck me that divers are neglected characters in crime fiction, yet they have one of the diciest jobs in the Met. Do you have any tips for our readers who are writing a series of books as opposed to writing a standalone novel? I wrote without knowing what I was doing, relying on instinct, trusting the first draft would brute-force its way into being. Selling the book on the basis that a female supporting character has a larger role than she actually does felt like lying to readers.

The two form an unlikely partnership in uncovering a particularly nasty case involving drowned girls and drugs. Now I’ve have had time to fully explore the source of these problems, it’s become clear that there was no intention to sell to the audience I hoped to reach.In fact, it was refreshing to find myself feeling more educated, as the book literally dives into the murky depths of the hidden riverways under the City of London. The dead girls all have the same nightclub stamp on the backs of their hands — the same one David’s daughter had the day she disappeared.
