About this deal
The new chef has sacked everyone and Louise, Meg's mother, needs her daughter's help, and she needs it NOW. This seemed a very predictable storyline with not much drama, and I felt the France vs Dorset setting for the main character was not believable. Like with A Wedding in Provence (which was the previous Fforde book I read) this is set in the 60’s and you get whisked straight back to the time. She settles into the hotel, becoming friends with the staff and Ambrosina, an elderly lady who lives there. I sound like a horrible person, but a lot about Meg's conflict-and-solutions are a bit too convenient as well.
A lot of the scenes are set around food, which makes perfect sense since the two main characters are chefs. The owners so Justin starts to ruffle Megs feathers and Meg digs her heals in further to keep the hotel going. There were loads and loads and loads of characters, many of whom shared the same initial (Andrew, Alexandra, Amanda, Antoine and Ambrosine, all in the first chapter, then Laura, Letty, Lexi, Lizzie and Louise, and then Sally, Sam, Simon, Susan and Suzanne – really, Susan *and* Suzanne? I absolutely adored this book as much as the previous instalments that helped us navigate through the ongoing lives of this trio of novice cooks. Meg longs to be a professional cook, but in 1964 the idea of a female chef running a kitchen is considered ridiculous.
Meg and Louise now need to get some staff back, with the help of long time resident of the hotel Ambrosine who does the flowers, picked fresh from the hotels gardens, they manage to bring back some locals to help. This could be one of those books you pick up for when you are not up to read books that deal with heavy themes.
Seeing how hard they fought to be a voice heard, to be accepted in a male dominated world, it’s eye opening, especially, for me it a world that my mother grew up in and must of had similar experiences. This may affect nutrition and allergen information therefore you should always check product labels and not rely solely on the information presented here.
