About this deal

Both joyfully entertaining and socially perceptive, Lauren’s debut is a vivid read on dating, work and family in Singapore through the lens of a brutally honest protagonist of gold. None of this gets resolved until nearly the last page of the book, and I use the word resolved very loosely. said the woman who once told me to drop a boyfriend in college because he was “only a biology undergrad. I liked those books, and I can see the superficial similarities—this is a humorous diary set in wealthy Singapore—but this book doesn’t bring much of an original perspective to the story of a 30-something finding themselves. I love how Lauren unfolds the story and introduces each of the characters smoothly into Andrea's life.

Lord knows we could all use some moments of escapism, and Ho's debut novel was the perfect way to unwind.

I am unfortunately not familiar with the Singaporean culture so I loved getting a little glimpse at the family at the beginning, it really made me understand better the pressure on Andrea's life. Andrea is quite content, thank you very much - or at least she believes she is, and she doesn't need a man to make her happy!

Also, her attempt to reflect the challenges in an interracial relationship and how narrow-minded people are to accept and trust one another's beliefs or culture is very much praisable. On the other hand, Andrea's relationship with the very much mature Eric is often formal and one-sided. A smart and witty depiction of navigating the world of dating, coupled with the messy (but amusing) dynamics of family life. Andrea is such a likeable protagonist, both incredibly hardworking and accomplished but also so human. If you want a light but equally inspiring story to read during summer, give Last Tang Standing a go. She has an emotional growth arc, where she learns to appreciate her friends even though they have too much plastic surgery, date assholes, and like to have public FaceTime sex.

I found Andrea very likeable, not perfect, making wrong decisions, it all happened to many of us and I liked that I could really relate to her. This didn’t bother me initially but as it persisted until nearly the end of the book, I started to fantasize about shooting beautiful Suresh out of a cannon without a helmet.Despite not getting on with LTS, I was pretty happy to try this author again because of how much I initially loved the idea of the book. The author says this book is anti-racist because of the interracial relationships but casual racism is still racism to me. And this book is set in Singapore, so that's probably where the CRAZY RICH ASIANS comparison comes in. After a promising beginning focused on family strife, Last Tang Standing turns its attention to Andrea’s love life, and that’s where it fails to deliver.
