The two specials that open the collection don't work as a great introduction to Waid's run on The Flash.

I've never been much of a fan of the Flash or have much familiarity with Mark Waid's writing but the Year One story arc was fantastic.

Mark Waid’s opening handful of issues begin to establish a few elements of what would continue through his tenure. I tried getting into the Geoff Johns Flash awhile back, but wasn’t very compelled by it, so I thought I’d give this a try and see if it would hook me better.

On top of that it helps show Wally's voice, and Waid does it SO naturally that I love the guy right away. It allows for not only Wally's thoughts and emotions to come across, but allows the reader to step inside the Flash to see what it's like when Wally bends the laws of physics.Can the two Flashes co-exist long enough to stop Replicant, a villain with the combined powers of the Rogues Gallery?

It was a fun little team-up that helps strengthen the relationship between Wally and Kyle, which ends up becoming a friendship that carried over into the Justice League book by Grant Morrison. Oscar Jimenez’s work is probably the best of the bunch, and The Flash would become a series he stayed on for about a year. The best parts of this arc though, was watching Wally travel across the future on his way back home. I’ve also heard that both have an affinity for donkey shows, but that’s never been verified by an independent source, to let’s consider that rumor for now.I recommend it for any Flash fans, or people reluctant to read The Flash because of its general hokiness. Impulse also crossed over into Flash for an Event or two as well, so that would help flesh out those stories, but its worth reading on its own merits. In October 2018, Waid joined Humanoids Publishing as Director of Creative Development before being promoted to Publisher in February 2020. After some discussion with editor Tom Brevoort, Waid found a way to make the requested changes, but by then, the decision had been made to fire Waid and Wieringo from the series.
